Sure, I go to church—but I'm not a church leader. Isn't it the pastor's responsibility to make sure a church is healthy? So shouldn't it be my pastor who reads this book, instead of me?
Actually, for a church to be a healthy Christian community, each member has a role to play. In What is a Healthy Church?, experienced pastor and church-health specialist Mark Dever describes nine characteristics of a healthy, biblically-based church. He also explains how each Christian has a vital responsibility in maintaining a healthy congregation—from pastors and other leaders, all the way down to those who sit in the pews each week. Dever challenges each and every believer to take an active interest in the health of their church, and offers practical advice, grounded in New Testament ecclesial theology, to help each person fulfill their special role in the body of Christ.
Mark Dever has pastored at four churches, including Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he is presently Senior Pastor. He is the Executive Director for 9Marks Ministries, a Christian organization which seeks to help local pastors improve the health and holiness of their churches. Dr. Dever is also a visiting professor at Beeson Divinity School and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
