He Who Gives Life: The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit, by Graham Cole, is the latest volume in Crossway's Foundations of Evangelical Theology series.
Joining other titles such as No One Like Him: The Doctrine of God and The Cross and Salvation: The Doctrine of Salvation, this book offers another crucial piece of evangelical systematic theology: a comprehensive theology of the Holy Spirit.
In considering the faces of the Triune God, the Holy Spirit is often the aspect that receives the least attention and seems to remain shrouded in mystery. Cole works to dispel this theological and practical bias—and offers pastors, teachers, and students of theology the chance to do the same. This substantial work is grounded in careful scriptural analysis, with an especially close consideration of the Holy Spirit in the story of Jesus Christ, as well as a survey of theological writings on the Holy Spirit from Augustine to the present. It also addresses issues of special concern in current times, such as the spiritual gifts of tongues and prophecy, and the role of the Spirit in the unity of the body of Christ.
Graham A. Cole is an ordained Anglican minister, as well as a professor of Biblical and Systematic theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has published many scholarly articles in theological journals and has written and contributed to several books.
