3 Hebrew Word Studies on Biblical Joy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sameach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The joy the people felt was more than just a spontaneous subjective emotion. It was rooted very concretely<\/strong> in all \u201cthat the LORD had done for David, Solomon, and for His people Israel.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, the Feast of Tabernacles was intended as a time of rejoicing for all the ways the Lord had blessed His people (Deut. 16:15<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people were filled with \u201cgreat joy\u201d at Solomon\u2019s coronation (1 Kin. 1:40<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haman\u2019s joy at his plot to kill Mordecai (Esth. 5:9, 14<\/a>) backfired when he was executed instead, \u201cand the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad\u201d (Esth. 8:15<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But more often, joy is connected directly to God<\/strong>: \u201cThe Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad.\u201d (Ps. 126:3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simchah<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This Hebrew word is one of several frequently occurring Hebrew words that express exceeding gladness<\/strong> of rejoicing. Like its synonyms, this word can apply to a disposition of heart (Prov. 14:10<\/a>; Jer. 15:16<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is frequently set in a context of feasting (Neh. 8:12<\/a>) and singing (1 Sam. 18:6<\/a>; Ps. 137:3<\/a>), as it is in a prophecy concerning God\u2019s singing over Jerusalem (Zeph. 3:17<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word is also used for the senseless happiness<\/strong> of the enemies of God\u2019s people (Judg. 16:23<\/a>; Ezek. 35:15<\/a>; 36:5<\/a>), of the foolish (Prov. 15:21<\/a>), of the lazy (Prov. 21:17<\/a>), and of the hypocrites (Job 20:5<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, joy in the Bible is usually associated with the people of God who celebrate God\u2019s blessing<\/strong> at a number of occasions \u2013 feasts, coronations of kings, victories in battle, and the dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem (Num. 10:10<\/a>; 1 Kin. 1:40<\/a>; 2 Chr. 20:27<\/a>; Neh. 12:27<\/a>). In fact, Moses exhorts the Israelites to serve God with joy, so that they would not lose their blessing (see Deut. 28:47<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gil<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A somewhat rare form that is more familiar to us as rejoice (1 Chr. 16:31<\/a>, Ps. 2:11<\/a>; 21:1<\/a>; 51:8<\/a>; Prov. 23:24-25<\/a>). In Isaiah<\/a>, when the prophet has already declared he will rejoice, but wants to emphasize his response to God, this term offers that direct form of exultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
