It was <strong>rooted very concretely<\/strong> in all \u201cthat the LORD had done for David, Solomon, and for His people Israel.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the Feast of Tabernacles was intended as a time of rejoicing for all the ways the Lord had blessed His people (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deuteronomy+16%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deuteronomy+16%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deut. 16:15<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The people were filled with \u201cgreat joy\u201d at Solomon\u2019s coronation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Kings+1%3A40&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Kings+1%3A40&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Kin. 1:40<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haman\u2019s joy at his plot to kill Mordecai (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Esther+5%3A9%2C+14&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Esther+5%3A9%2C+14&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esth. 5:9, 14<\/a>) backfired when he was executed instead, \u201cand the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Esther+8%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Esther+8%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esth. 8:15<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But more often, <strong>joy is connected directly to God<\/strong>: \u201cThe Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+126%3A3&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+126%3A3&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ps. 126:3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-simchah\"><strong>Simchah<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This Hebrew word is one of several frequently occurring Hebrew words that express <strong>exceeding gladness<\/strong> of rejoicing. Like its synonyms, this word can apply to a disposition of heart (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+14%3A10&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+14%3A10&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prov. 14:10<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jeremiah+15%3A16&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jeremiah+15%3A16&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jer. 15:16<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is frequently set in a context of feasting (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Nehemiah+8%3A12&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Nehemiah+8%3A12&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neh. 8:12<\/a>) and singing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Samuel+18%3A6&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Samuel+18%3A6&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Sam. 18:6<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+137%3A3&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+137%3A3&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ps. 137:3<\/a>), as it is in a prophecy concerning God\u2019s singing over Jerusalem (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Zephaniah+3%3A17&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Zephaniah+3%3A17&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zeph. 3:17<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word is also used for the <strong>senseless happiness<\/strong> of the enemies of God\u2019s people (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Judges+16%3A23&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Judges+16%3A23&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judg. 16:23<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ezekiel+35%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ezekiel+35%3A15&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ezek. 35:15<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ezekiel+36%3A5&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ezekiel+36%3A5&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">36:5<\/a>), of the foolish (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+15%3A21&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+15%3A21&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prov. 15:21<\/a>), of the lazy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+21%3A17&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+21%3A17&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prov. 21:17<\/a>), and of the hypocrites (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Job+20%3A5&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Job+20%3A5&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job 20:5<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, joy in the Bible is usually associated with the people of God who <strong>celebrate God\u2019s blessing<\/strong> at a number of occasions \u2013 feasts, coronations of kings, victories in battle, and the dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Numbers+10%3A10&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Numbers+10%3A10&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Num. 10:10<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Kings+1%3A40&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Kings+1%3A40&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Kin. 1:40<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Chronicles+20%3A27&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Chronicles+20%3A27&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Chr. 20:27<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Nehemiah+12%3A27&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Nehemiah+12%3A27&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neh. 12:27<\/a>). In fact, Moses exhorts the Israelites to serve God with joy, so that they would not lose their blessing (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deuteronomy+28%3A47&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deuteronomy+28%3A47&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deut. 28:47<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gil\"><strong>Gil<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A somewhat rare form that is more familiar to us as rejoice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Chronicles+16%3A31&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Chronicles+16%3A31&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Chr. 16:31<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+2%3A11&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+2%3A11&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ps. 2:11<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+21%3A1&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+21%3A1&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">21:1<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+51%3A8&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Psalm+51%3A8&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51:8<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+23%3A24-25&amp;version=NKJV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Proverbs+23%3A24-25&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prov. 23:24-25<\/a>).
