It is not love based on the goodness of the beloved, or upon natural affinity or emotion. Like its synonym&nbsp;<em>philia<\/em>, it designates love between persons (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=John+13%3A35&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 13:35<\/a>), or people for God (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+John+2%3A15&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 John 2:15<\/a>), of God for humanity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rom.+5%3A8&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rom. 5:8<\/a>), and of God for Christ (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=John+17%3A26&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 17:26<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas&nbsp;<em>phila<\/em>&nbsp;emphasizes the idea of love arising from personal relationships,&nbsp;<em>agape<\/em>&nbsp;is founded upon deep appreciation and high regard. PHILEO \u2013 GREEK WORD FOR LOVE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of four greek words for love, this one signifies friendship, fondness, affection, delight, and personal attachment. This word is on a feeling \u2013 a heart of love \u2013 whereas\u00a0<em>agape<\/em>\u00a0is a matter of benevolence, duty, and commitment. We are commanded to have\u00a0<em>agape<\/em>\u00a0love (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Matt.+5%3A44&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt. 5:44<\/a>) but not\u00a0<em>phileo<\/em> love because feelings cannot be commanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Phileo<\/em>&nbsp;is also the word for \u201ckiss.\u201d Jesus asked peter if he had unconditional, sacrificial&nbsp;<em>agape<\/em>&nbsp;love, but Peter responded that he had&nbsp;<em>phileo<\/em>, or brotherly love. Peter\u2019s love deepened, and he wrote of&nbsp;<em>agape<\/em>&nbsp;love in his later books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greek-word-for-love-other-uses-of-phileo\"><strong>GREEK WORD FOR LOVE<em>: OTHER USES OF PHILEO<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Matthew+6%3A5&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 6:5<\/a>:&nbsp;And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.
