SCRIPTURE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Philippians 4:8-9 NKJV<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy\u2014meditate<\/strong> on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OBSERVATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Taken from the Blackaby Study Bible<\/a> introductory notes on the book of Philippians.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The early church accepted Philippians as an authentic letter written by the apostle Paul (Phil. 1:1<\/a>), and modern scholars agree. Paul wrote the letter from prison (1:13, 14<\/a>), almost certainly in Rome (Acts 28:16\u201331<\/a>) in A.D. 61\u201362. His situation confined him, but it did not keep him from communicating with churches and preaching the gospel to his captors (Phil. 1:12\u201314<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A notable feature is Paul\u2019s sensitivity to the Christian mind. He challenged believers to strive together \u201cwith one mind\u201d (<\/em>Phil. 1:27<\/a>), to be \u201clike-minded<\/em>\u201d (2:2<\/a>), to be \u201cin lowliness of mind<\/em>\u201d (2:3<\/a>), and to \u201clet this mind be in you which was also in Christ<\/em>\u201d (2:5<\/a>). Other statements include: \u201cas many as are mature, have this mind<\/em>\u201d (3:15<\/a>), and the peace of God will \u201cguard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus<\/em>\u201d (4:7<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul asserted that the Philippians\u2019 enemies \u201cset their mind on earthly things<\/em>\u201d (3:19<\/a>). He was concerned that Christians have a godly perspective as protection against false and corrupt teachers. This defense was found in knowing Christ personally (3:8\u201310<\/a>) and meditating on that which is from God (4:8<\/a>). In particular, Paul used the life of Christ as the ultimate example of how Christians ought to think and act (2:5\u201311<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

APPLICATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Greek word logizomai<\/em>, translated \u201cmeditate,\u201d has various nuances. It can mean to account, consider, or let one\u2019s mind dwell on something. Paul\u2019s focus was not indifferent examination, but practical consideration that leads to action. We are not merely to reflect on a principle, but we are to live according to all the implications of God\u2019s great salvation. That takes energy, striving to know fully all of what God desires for our life. When we consider what God has promised His children and meditate on the truth revealed in His Word, the Holy Spirit works those truths into our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRAYER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Set a goal for yourself this week! Pray and meditate on God’s promises for 5 minutes before bed\u2014or any other goal you can think of to help you apply this information to your life. Here’s a prayer we came up with based on Phil. 4:8:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord, help me to keep my mind on what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of virtue, and praiseworthy. Teach me how to guard my thoughts from the things of this world. I want to meditate on what you say. Please transform me from the inside out and help me to influence others toward this way of thinking. Thank you for speaking to me through your Word. In the name of Jesus, amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
