Paul provides direction on being of one mind in his letter to the Philippians. And, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/product.php?productid=77366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESV Expository Commentary Set<\/a> has great insight on this passage. Here are Paul&#8217;s remarks, followed by an excerpt from the commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A1%E2%80%934&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philippians 2:1\u20134<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-section-overview\"><strong>Section Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These four verses are one long sentence in Greek. The sentence has an \u201cif\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:1<\/a>)\/\u201cthen\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2a&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">v. 2ab<\/a>) structure, followed by a series of attitudes and actions showing how to live out the main idea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2-4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(vv. 2c\u20134<\/a>), which is that, for Paul to experience fullness of joy, <strong>the Christians of Philippi must be unified<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2a&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:2ab<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This passage is linked to three sections of Philippians:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the previous verses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+1%3A12%E2%80%9330&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1:12\u201330<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the following verses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A5%E2%80%9311&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:5\u201311<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the final verses of the body (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+4%3A2%E2%80%933&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4:2\u20133<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>First,<\/em> t<strong>hese verses fit with the previous verses<\/strong> because they demonstrate that Paul practiced what he is preaching, as he seeks the interests of others above his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Second,<\/em> <strong>these verses describe the Christian mind<\/strong>, while the verses that follow describe the mind of Christ (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A5%E2%80%9311&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:5\u201311<\/a>). Christ preeminently lived out these principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Third,<\/em> <strong>this same command appears again as the climactic command<\/strong> at the close of the book\u2019s body, where Paul calls Euodia and Syntyche to agree in the Lord (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+4%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4:2<\/a>). We could bring out the similarity by translating as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Complete my joy so that you may <strong>think the same thing<\/strong> [to auto <em>phron\u0113te<\/em>]. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:2<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I urge Euodia and Syntyche to <strong>think the same thing<\/strong> [to auto <em>phronein<\/em>] in the Lord. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+4%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4:2<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-section-outline\"><strong>Section Outline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exhortation: Gospel Thinking (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A1%E2%80%934&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:1\u20134<\/a>)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shared Gospel Blessings (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:1<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Call for a Shared Gospel Thinking (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:2ab<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specific Gospel Dos and Don\u2019ts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:2c\u20134<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-comment-being-of-one-mind\"><strong>Comment: Being of One Mind<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As just noted, these four verses are one sentence in the original language. The structure is an \u201cif\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">v. 1<\/a>)\/\u201cthen\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">v. 2ab<\/a>) construction followed by a series of participles spelling out how to carry out the command (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Philippians+2%3A2-4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vv. 2c\u20134<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-1\"><strong>2:1<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cif\u201d clause contains five blessings the Philippians already share in common through the gospel of Christ. The point is a cumulative one. The way Paul formulates each phrase forces the Philippians to answer a similar question five times. Perhaps this can best be seen as a conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paul:<\/strong> <em>\u201cIs there any encouragement in Christ?\u201d<\/em><br>The Philippians: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Paul:<\/strong> <em>\u201cIs there any comfort from love?\u201d<\/em><br>The Philippians: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Paul:<\/strong> <em>\u201cIs there any participation in the Spirit?\u201d<\/em><br>The Philippians: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Paul:<\/strong> <em>\u201cIs there any affection?\u201d<\/em><br>The Philippians: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Paul:<\/strong><em> \u201cIs there any sympathy?\u201d<\/em><br>The Philippians: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would anyone communicate this way? One builds a case to lead to an inevitable conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I say to my child:<\/strong> <em>\u201cDid I buy your clothes?<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><br>Child: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Me:<\/strong> <em>\u201cDid I wash your clothes?<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><br>Child: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cDid I dry your clothes?\u201d<br>Child: <em>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><br><strong>Me:<\/strong> <em>\u201cThen it should not be too much to ask for you to fold your clothes!<\/em><em>\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul communicates in a similar way in order to build a case leading to a conclusion in verse 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-2ab\"><strong>2:2ab <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The five-fold \u201cyes\u201d of shared gospel blessings should lead to the singular \u201cyes\u201d of a shared mind-set. The way Paul formulates the command is striking. Obeying the command is an invitation to fill up Paul\u2019s joy in them: if all those things are true, then \u201c<em>complete my joy by being of the same mind<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-2c-4\"><strong>2:2c\u20134 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of verses 2\u20134 feature six different ways a Christian mind should be expressed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>having the same love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being in full accord<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being of one mind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>doing nothing from selfish ambition or conceit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>counting others more significant than yourselves, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>looking not only to one\u2019s own interests but also to the interests of others.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-response\"><strong>Response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-one-becomes-humble-being-of-one-mind\"><strong>How One Becomes Humble, Being of One Mind<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul calls for humility to live out the Christian life. But how does one become humble? Someone asked the great preacher Martyn Lloyd-Jones this very question. His answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A friend was asking me the other day, \u201cHow can I be humble?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He felt there was pride in him, and he wanted to know how to get rid of it. He seemed to think that I had some patent remedy and could tell him, \u201cDo this, that, and the other and you will be humble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I said:&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u201cI have no method or technique. I can\u2019t tell you to get down on your knees and believe in prayer because I know you will soon be proud of that. There\u2019s only one way to be humble, and that is to look into the face of Jesus Christ; you cannot be anything else when you see him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the only way. <strong>Humility is not something you can create within yourself<\/strong>; rather, you look at him, you realize who he is and what he has done, and you are humbled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is exactly what Paul does next.
