The Sureness of the Resurrection \u2014 An Overview of 1 Corinthians 15:1\u201358<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apparently some of the Corinthians were denying the physical resurrection of the body. Their rejection was not due to an over-realized eschatology but reflects a typical Greek and pagan view in which the body was rejected as inferior. It is difficult to know if this matter was reported to Paul since he does not use the typical \u2018now about\u2019 formula (7:1<\/a>, 25<\/a>; 8:1<\/a>; 12:1<\/a>; 16:1<\/a>, 12<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps what Paul writes here represents a response to a report he heard. An overview summary of the chapter is appropriate here. Paul reminds the Corinthians of the gospel he taught, which focused on Christ crucified and risen, and then provides eyewitness evidence that Christ is truly risen (15:1\u201311<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did the Resurrection Happen? If So, Will Believers be Resurrected Like the Resurrection of Jesus?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The next stage of the argument posits the indivisibility of the resurrection of Christ and the resurrection of believers (15:12\u201319<\/a>). The one entails the other, and the consequences of denying the resurrection of Christ are rehearsed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verses 20\u201328<\/a> focus on sequence; the resurrection of believers does not immediately follow Christ\u2019s resurrection. The resurrection of believers is future, and Christ\u2019s resurrection has set in motion a process that will conclude with the arrival of the end and the coming of the kingdom in its fullness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some experiential arguments are also adduced for the resurrection (15:29\u201334<\/a>). If there were no resurrection, it would not make sense to be baptized for the dead, nor would it make sense to risk life and limb for the sake of the gospel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Paul gives a battery of arguments supporting the resurrection of the body; these arguments will be summarized in more detail in the study of 15:35\u201358<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel and the Witnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus (<\/strong>15:1\u201311<\/strong><\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Context<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Paul begins by reminding the Corinthians of the gospel he preached and they received. They also stand and are saved by this gospel if they believe to the end (vv. 1\u20132<\/a>). The gospel is of first importance and has two elements: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(1)<\/strong> Christ died, and his death is verified by his burial (vv. 3\u20134<\/a>); and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(2)<\/strong> Christ was raised, and the resurrection is verified by his appearances (vv. 4\u201310<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He appeared to Cephas, the Twelve, 500 people at the same time, James, all the apostles and, lastly, Paul (vv. 5\u20138<\/a>). Paul reflects on his unusual status as an apostle, since he persecuted the church, yet by God\u2019s grace he serves as an apostle (vv. 9\u201310<\/a>). Still, the apostles proclaim a common message of Christ crucified and risen, and the Corinthians have put their faith in this message (v. 11<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did the resurrection happen? It did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comment<\/strong>ary<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

VERSE 1<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

“Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.” (15:1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the topic of the resurrection is inserted as the last major discussion in the letter so that the gospel receives the emphasis both at the beginning (1:18\u20132:5<\/a>) and at the end of the letter, since it is imperative that the Corinthians do not forget the gospel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word gospel (euangelion<\/em> and the verb euangelizomai<\/em> translated as preached; see also <\/a><\/a><\/a>Gal. 1:11<\/a>) reaches back to the promise of return from exile in the Old Testament (Isa. 40:9<\/a>; 41:27<\/a>; 52:7<\/a>; 61:1<\/a>). In Isaiah 40\u201366 the return from exile links to the fulfillment of God\u2019s promises to Israel and the coming of the new creation (Isa. 65:17<\/a>; 66:22<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul sees this gospel \u2013 the fulfillment of God\u2019s saving promises<\/strong> \u2013 as realized in the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The forgiveness of sins accomplished at the cross represents the fulfillment of God\u2019s eschatological promises and of the new exodus prophesied in Isaiah (11:11\u201315<\/a>; 40:3\u201311<\/a>; 42:16<\/a>; 43:2<\/a>, 5\u20137<\/a>, 16\u201319<\/a>; 48:20\u201321<\/a>; 49:6\u201311<\/a>; 51:10<\/a>) since Israel was in exile because of its sin. When Paul proclaimed the gospel, the Corinthians received and welcomed it (cf. Gal. 1:9<\/a>; Col. 2:6<\/a>; 1 Thess. 2:13<\/a>), entering into a saving relationship with God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Corinthians also stand in the gospel, which accords with the claim that believers stand in grace (Rom. 5:2<\/a>) and stand in faith (Rom. 11:20<\/a>; 2 Cor. 1:24<\/a>). Believers begin by means of the gospel and continue to stand in the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VERSE 2<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

“By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.” (15:2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believers are saved by the gospel \u2013 that is, they are rescued from the wrath of God which will be poured out on the last day (cf. Rom. 5:9<\/a>; 1 Thess. 1:10<\/a>; 5:9<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final salvation, however, will not come without perseverance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believers must hold firmly (katechete<\/em>) to the good news they received, and this verb is used elsewhere to designate perseverance (see Luke 8:15<\/a>; Heb. 3:6<\/a>, 14<\/a>; 10:23<\/a>). If the believers do not remain in the faith, then their initial faith was in vain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are reminded of the parable of the soils, where it is said that the seed falling on rocky ground represents those who \u2018believe for a while, but in the time of testing . . . fall away<\/em>\u2019 (Luke 8:13<\/a>). The demand to persevere is not unusual in Paul, for he often summons his readers to continue in faith until the end (cf. Rom. 11:22<\/a>; Gal. 3:4<\/a>; Col. 1:23<\/a>; 1 Thess. 3:1\u20135<\/a>; 2 Thess. 2:15<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VERSE 3<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,” (15:3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gospel the Corinthians received is explicated. Paul passed on (paradid\u014dmi<\/em>) the tradition of the gospel he also received (paralamban\u014d<\/em>). In one sense, the gospel Paul proclaimed was independently given to him (<\/a>Gal. 1:11\u201317<\/a>), but Paul does not deny that he received the fundamental tenets of the gospel from others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gospel handed down is of first importance, representing the fundamentals of the Christian faith \u2013 the baseline and touchstone for all that is taught. Paul proceeds to focus on the death and resurrection of Christ for the forgiveness of sins. The phrase Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures may represent a confessional statement cited by Paul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation of the gospel is that Christ died to secure the forgiveness of sins for believers. As Galatians 1:4 says, Christ \u2018gave himself for our sins\u2019. Paul almost certainly means that Christ died in the place of sinners and took their sins upon himself in his death, and he expresses this truth in different ways (see Rom. 3:24\u201326<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We read in 2 Corinthians 5:21 that \u2018God made him who had no sin to be sin for us\u2019. Or, as Galatians 3:13 says, \u2018Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.\u2019 Other ways of expressing the same truth are that believers \u2018have now been justified by his blood\u2019 (Rom. 5:9<\/a>); \u2018Christ died for the ungodly\u2019 (Rom. 5:6<\/a>); \u2018while we were still sinners, Christ died for us\u2019 (Rom. 5:8<\/a>); and \u2018He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification\u2019 (Rom. 4:25<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reading here is supported by the reference to the Scriptures. Paul almost certainly has Isaiah 53 in mind:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps Isaiah 53:12 is also specifically in mind:
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The death of Christ for sins was planned by God beforehand, and Paul believes those who read the Old Testament Scriptures rightly will see this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VERSE 4<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

“that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,” (15:4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In saying that Christ\u2019s death was found in the Scriptures, Paul is probably not including the statement that he was buried. Instead, Christ\u2019s burial verified that he had truly died. The second element of the gospel, then, is that the Christ was raised on the third day. Jesus often predicted his death and resurrection during his ministry (Matt. 16:21<\/a>; 17:22\u201323<\/a>; 20:18\u201320<\/a> par.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did the resurrection happen according to Old Testament prophecy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resurrection is also traced to the Old Testament Scriptures and texts such as Psalm 16:9\u201311 (cf. Acts 2:24\u201328<\/a>). The sudden change in Psalm 22 from suffering to victory was also probably read as an indication of resurrection (Ps. 22:22<\/a>). So, too, in Isaiah 53 the suffering servant \u2018will see his offspring and prolong his days\u2019 (Isa. 53:10<\/a>), and \u2018After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied\u2019 (53:11<\/a>). Similarly, God promises to give the servant \u2018a portion among the great\u2019 (53:12<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some maintain that the reference to the third day is not part of the scriptural prophecy. On the other hand, New Testament writers may have seen a pattern in God delivering or manifesting himself to his people on the third day (cf. Gen. 22:4<\/a>; Exod. 19:11, 15, 16<\/a>; Josh. 1:11<\/a>; Judg. 20:30<\/a>; Hos. 6:2<\/a>; Jon. 1:17<\/a>). There is a recognition that forgiveness comes through both the death and the resurrection of Christ (cf. Rom. 4:25<\/a>; 5:9\u201310<\/a>; 1 Tim. 3:16<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VERSE 5<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

“and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.” (15:5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as the burial verified Christ\u2019s death, so too the appearances demonstrated that he was risen from the dead. The appearances are emphasized since the Corinthians were particularly doubting the resurrection of believers; thus Paul wants to secure in their minds the factual truth of Jesus\u2019 resurrection and the evidence supporting such. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resurrection appearances to so many have a cumulative effect; so many different people at so many different times were not deceived. Even though the Gospels begin with the appearances to the women, Paul skips these \u2013 perhaps because he wants to appeal to witnesses accepted by contemporary Roman society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He begins with the appearance to Cephas, and this individual appearance is also noted in Luke (24:34<\/a>). It seems that the order is chronological with the repeated use of temporal words: then (v. 5<\/a>); \u2018After that\u2019 (v. 6<\/a>); \u2018Then\u2019 and \u2018then\u2019 (v. 7<\/a>); and \u2018last of all\u2019 (v. 8<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appearance to the Twelve is difficult to nail down. Perhaps the reference to the Twelve is another way of talking about the apostolic group and should not be pressed. If so, the appearance to the disciples recorded in John 20:19\u201323<\/a> could be in view. But Thomas was not with them (though perhaps Matthias was!); thus the next appearance could be intended (John 20:24\u201329<\/a>), or perhaps another appearance that is not recorded in the Gospels is in mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number twelve could refer to the apostles without needing to be twelve men literally present since Judas was no longer part of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
