The first four commandments pertain to the relationship of the Israelites with God, and the other six deal with social relationships within the covenant community. Centuries before, God had led Abraham out of Ur (<a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gen.+15%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gen.+15%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gen. 15:7<\/a>); now He led Abraham\u2019s descendants out of Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ten Commandments are an excellent summary of 10 divine rules for human conduct. They might be called rules of (1) religion, (2) worship, (3) reverence, (4) time, (5) authority, (6) life, (7) purity, (8) property, (9) tongue, and (10) contentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-first-commandment-20-3\"><strong>The first commandment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20:3<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><em>&#8220;You shall have no other gods before&nbsp;me.&#8221;<strong> \u2014 Exodus 20:3<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first of the Ten Commandments is that Israel was to worship the one true God. Worshiping false gods would be setting up rivals to Him (before Me may mean \u201cin opposition to Me\u201d as well as \u201cin My presence\u201d) and thus overlooking His uniqueness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A22-23&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A22-23&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cf. vv. 22-23<\/a>). Unfortunately Israel often disobeyed this very first command by worshiping the idols of other nations. This eventually resulted in her being exiled to Assyria and Babylonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-second-commandment-20-4-6\"><strong>The second commandment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A4-6&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A4-6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20:4-6<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><em>&#8220;You shall not make for yourself an image&nbsp;in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.&nbsp;<\/em><sup><em>5&nbsp;<\/em><\/sup><em>You shall not bow down to them or worship&nbsp;them; for I, the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God, am a jealous God,&nbsp;punishing the children for the sin of the parents&nbsp;to the third and fourth generation&nbsp;of those who hate me,&nbsp;<\/em><sup><em>6&nbsp;<\/em><\/sup><em>but showing love to a thousand&nbsp;generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.&#8221; <strong>\u2014 Exodus 20:4-6<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worship of God was to be spiritual, not material. Israel was forbidden from worshiping idols (<a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">v. 3<\/a>) and also from making images of God. Idol is <em>pesel<\/em>, \u201ccarved wood or stone,\u201d from <em>pasal<\/em>, \u201cto carve\u201d. Later (<a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+34%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+34%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">34:17<\/a>) \u201ccast idols\u201d made from molten metal were forbidden too. Since God is spiritual no material representation can possibly resemble Him. To make an idol of God like something in the sky (sun, moon, stars), or on the earth (animals), or in the waters below (fish, crocodiles, or other sea life) was forbidden because God is a jealous God (cf. <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+34%3A14&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+34%3A14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">34:14<\/a>; <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+5%3A9&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+5%3A9&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Deut. 5:9<\/a>; <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+6%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+6%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">6:15<\/a>; <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+32%3A16&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+32%3A16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">32:16<\/a>, <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+32%3A21&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+32%3A21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">21<\/a>; <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Josh.+24%3A19&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Josh.+24%3A19&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Josh. 24:19<\/a>), that is, He is zealous that devotion be given exclusively to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His uniqueness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex.+20%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex.+20%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ex. 20:3<\/a>) requires unique devotion. Absence of such dedication is sin and has its effect on future generations. Those who thus are influenced to hate God will be punished by Him. By contrast He is loyal (showing <em>khesed<\/em>, \u201cloyal love\u201d) to those who love Him and who show that love by their obedience (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+John+5%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+John+5%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 John 5:3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-third-commandment-20-7\"><strong>The third commandment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20:7<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><em>&#8220;You shall not misuse the name of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God, for the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.&#8221; <strong>\u2014 Exodus 20:7<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name of \u2026 God should be honored and protected. The Israelites were not to use His name for any idle, frivolous, or insincere purpose (such as speaking His name when taking an oath with no intention of keeping it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Lev.+19%3A12&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Lev.+19%3A12&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lev. 19:12<\/a>). People should not use His name for selfish or evil purposes (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ps.+139%3A20&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ps.+139%3A20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ps. 139:20<\/a>; also see comments on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+5%3A11&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Deut.+5%3A11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deut. 5:11<\/a>), thereby seeking to usurp His authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-fourth-commandment-20-8-11\"><strong>The fourth commandment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A8-11&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A8-11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20:8-11<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><em>&#8220;Remember the Sabbath&nbsp;day by keeping it holy.&nbsp;<\/em><sup><em>9&nbsp;<\/em><\/sup><em>Six days you shall labor and do all your work,&nbsp;<\/em><sup><em>10&nbsp;<\/em><\/sup><em>but the seventh day is a sabbath&nbsp;to the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.&nbsp;<\/em><sup><em>11&nbsp;<\/em><\/sup><em>For in six days the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;made the heavens and the earth,&nbsp;the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested&nbsp;on the seventh day.&nbsp;Therefore the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.&#8221;<strong> \u2014 Exodus 20:8-11<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A day of solemn worship of God should be kept weekly. Keeping the Sabbath Day \u2026 holy means to separate it, the seventh day, from the other six as a special day to the Lord. People are to work in six days and worship on the seventh. This contrasted with the Israelites\u2019 slavery in Egypt when, presumably, they had no break in their daily routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basis for this commandment is God\u2019s creating the universe in six days and resting on the seventh (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gen.+2%3A2-3&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gen.+2%3A2-3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gen. 2:2-3<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex.+16%3A23&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex.+16%3A23&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ex. 16:23<\/a>). This was not to be a day of slothful inactivity but of spiritual service through religious observances. For the violation of this command God imposed on Israel the death penalty (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex.+31%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex.+31%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ex. 31:15<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Num.+15%3A32-36&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Num.+15%3A32-36&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Num. 15:32-36<\/a>). In the present Church Age the day of worship has been changed from Saturday to Sunday because of Jesus\u2019 resurrection on the first day of the week (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Acts+20%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Acts+20%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acts 20:7<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Cor.+16%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Cor.+16%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Cor. 16:2<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-fifth-commandment-20-12\"><strong>The fifth commandment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A12&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A12&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20:12<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><em>&#8220;Honor your father and your mother,&nbsp;so that you may live long&nbsp;in the land&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;your God is giving you.&#8221; <strong>\u2014 Exodus 20:12<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commandments 5-10, the second portion of the Law (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A12-17&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A12-17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vv. 12-17<\/a>), deal with one\u2019s relationships to others. All the commandments include a negative except the fourth (the last in the first group) and the fifth (the first in the second group). The fifth commandment enjoins respect (honor) of parents. It implies obedience and submission to them (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph.+6%3A1-2&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph.+6%3A1-2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph. 6:1-2<\/a>). The promise of longevity that accompanies the command (live long) refers to duration as a nation in covenant relationship with God (in the land the Lord your God is giving you) rather than a lengthened lifespan for each obedient individual. The marital vow is a holy commitment that should not be violated by sexual unfaithfulness under any circumstances. Keeping this law helps maintain stability in a society by protecting individuals\u2019 reputations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-tenth-commandment-20-17\"><strong>The tenth commandment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Exodus+20%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20:17<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><em>\u201cYou shall not covet&nbsp;your neighbor\u2019s house. You shall not covet your neighbor\u2019s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.\u201d<strong> \u2014 Exodus 20:17<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a general safeguard against many other sins, particularly commandments six through nine. Israelites were not to long for, desire earnestly, or lust after what legitimately belonged to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These commandments are the fundamental statements of a good and wholesome society as ordered by the holy and righteous God. Though believers today are not under the Law (<a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rom.+6%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rom.+6%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rom. 6:15<\/a>), they are under obligation to abide by the holy standards represented in the Ten Commandments.
