You very easily could have ended up on a site with not-so-reliable information (we\u2019re looking at you, Wikipedia!). But, here you are! And you\u2019ll be better off for it because you won&#8217;t just learn reliable information on the Nephilim. We\u2019re <em>also<\/em> going to teach you how to do the research yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pick Reliable Resources for Researching Nephilim &amp; Other Topics in the Bible<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, we need to pick reliable resources for researching Nephilim in the Bible. We will want quality information, from good sources. Here are some easy tips to get started:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tips for telling a good source from a bad source<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Research the author \u2014 are they credible?<\/li><li>Look at their citations \u2014 do they have any? Where did they get their information?<\/li><li>Beware of overly dramatic language.<\/li><li>Does the website and\/or publisher appear professional and recommended by other professionals?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Primary Sources on Nephilim<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before jumping into secondary sources, <strong>let\u2019s take a look at what the Bible says about Nephilim. <\/strong>This should be the first place you look. However, it can be tricky finding every reference without help. Right now, let\u2019s see how many verses we can find containing \u201cNephilim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Genesis 6:1-8, NIV<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">\u201cWhen human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, \u2018My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.\u2019<br><br>The <strong>Nephilim<\/strong> were on the earth in those days\u2014and also afterward\u2014when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.<br><br>The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, \u2018I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created\u2014and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground\u2014for I regret that I have made them.\u2019 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Numbers 13:31-13, NIV<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">\u201cBut the men who had gone up with him said, \u2018We can\u2019t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.\u2019 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, \u2018The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the <strong>Nephilim<\/strong> there (the descendants of Anak come from the <strong>Nephilim<\/strong>). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Always read verses in context!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strong\u2019s Tagged Bibles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/StrongsDef.jpg\" alt=\"The Hebrew word for nephilim in a Strong's Tagged Bible\" class=\"wp-image-47065\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The search feature only looks for the word in the language you\u2019ve searched in. In our case, we used English. But you can also search for the word in its original language, Hebrew, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/get-strongs-tagged-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strong\u2019s Tagged Bible<\/a>.<br><br>First, tap on any word you want to look up. Right away, a definition will appear. Sometimes, words in the original language can have a different meaning than we expect! Dictionary entries like this one will make sure you  are on the right track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, search the Strong\u2019s number throughout the Bible (peep some of those in-depth search options we mentioned previously). You may or may not find new instances of the word being used. However, the verses we found in our first search really are the only ones that reference \u201cNephilim.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Secondary Sources on Nephilim<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, it can be good to look at secondary sources. These resources are created by people who have spent their lives academically studying the Bible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with academic resources that use simple sentences and quick blurbs. You\u2019ll find notes like these in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/home.php?cat=300&amp;bible-category=study-bibles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study Bibles<\/a>. Here are some quotes we found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">Nephilim. People of great size and strength. (see Nu 13:31-33; Dt 1:28 and note). The Hebrew word means \u201cfallen ones.\u201d They were viewed by people as \u201cthe heroes of old, men of reknown,\u201d but in God\u2019s eyes they were sinners (\u201cfallen ones\u201d) ripe for judgment.<strong> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/study-niv-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">NIV Study Bible Notes<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/NIVSBNotesGen6-4.jpg\" alt=\"NIV Study Bible Notes on Nephilim\" class=\"wp-image-47066\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you catch the extra verse reference? Our search results didn\u2019t pull up Deuteronomy 1:28, but the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"NIV Study Bible Notes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/product.php?productid=16999\" target=\"_blank\">NIV Study Bible Notes<\/a> said this verse references Nephilim. Let\u2019s read it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">\u201cWhere can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, \u2018The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.\u201d <strong>\u2014 Dt 1:28<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/NIVSBNotesPopup.jpg\" alt=\"Pop up window in the Olive Tree Bible App\" class=\"wp-image-47067\"\/><figcaption>We tapped on the verse reference in the study Bible notes to read it!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Then, the NIV Study Bible contains another note on this verse.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><strong>Anakites.<\/strong> Earlier inhabitants of Canaan, described as giants (see Dt 2:10, 21; 9:2; Nu 13:32-33).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve already read the verse from Numbers, but let\u2019s look at the other verses mentioned here for further background information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">\u201cThe Emites used to live there\u2014a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.\u201d <strong>\u2014 Dt 2:10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">\u201cThat too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place.\u201d <strong>\u2014 Dt 2:20-21<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">\u201cThe people are strong and tall\u2014Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: &#8216;Who can stand up against the Anakites?&#8217;\u201d <strong>\u2014 Dt 9:2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/NIVSBNotesDuet.jpg\" alt=\"Note on the Anakites in the NIV Study Bible Notes\" class=\"wp-image-47068\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One Last Piece of Information from the NIV Study Bible<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase \u201csons of God\u201d here (in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Genesis+6%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 6:2<\/a>) is interpreted to refer either to angels or to human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sons of God as Angels<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In such places as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Job+1%3A6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job 1:6<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Job+2%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2:1<\/a> it refers to angels, and probably also in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ps+29%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ps 29:1<\/a> (where it is translated \u201cheavenly beings\u201d). Some interpreters also appeal to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jude+6%E2%80%937&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jude 6\u20137<\/a> (as well as to Jewish literature) in referring the phrase here to angels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others, however, maintain that intermarriage and cohabitation between angels and human beings, though commonly mentioned in ancient mythologies, are surely excluded by the very nature of the created order (see ch. 1; Lk 20:34\u201336). Elsewhere, expressions equivalent to \u201csons of God\u201d often refer to human beings, though in contexts quite different from the present one (see Dt 14:1; 32:5; Ps 73:15; Isa 43:6; Hos 1:10; 11:1; Lk 3:38; 1Jn 3:1\u20132, 10).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sons of God as Sethites<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSons of God\u201d (vv. 2, 4) possibly refers to godly men, and \u201cthe daughters\u201d to sinful women (significantly, they are not called \u201cdaughters of God\u201d), probably from the wicked line of Cain. If so, the context suggests that vv. 1\u20132 describe the intermarriage of the Sethites (\u201csons of God\u201d) of ch. 5 with the Cainites (\u201cthe daughters\u201d) of ch. 4, indicating a breakdown in the separation of the two groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sons of God as Corrupt Rulers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another plausible suggestion is that the \u201csons of God\u201d refers to royal figures (kings were closely associated with gods in the ancient Near East) who proudly perpetuated and aggravated the corrupt lifestyle of Lamech, son of Cain (virtually a royal figure), and established for themselves royal harems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/NIVSBNotesGen6-2.jpg\" alt=\"A long note from the NIV Study Bible on Genesis 6:2, the sons of God.\" class=\"wp-image-47069\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Have We Learned So Far?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Nephilim are tall<\/li><li>The Nephilim are strong<\/li><li>There were a lot of Nephilim<\/li><li>The Anakites descend from the Nephilim<\/li><li>The Anakties (and then perhaps the Nephilim?) are from Canaan<\/li><li>The Emites may also be Nephilim<\/li><li>The Rephaites may also be Nephilim<\/li><li>The Nephilim were well known<\/li><li>The Nephilim may have been a result of the intermarriage of the \u201csons of God\u201d and \u201cthe daughters,\u201d or perhaps they were also simply known as heroes of old<\/li><li>There are three different ideas on who the sons of God and daughters were:<ul><li>Angels and human women<ul><li>\u201cSons of God\u201d mean angels elsewhere in the Bible<\/li><li>However, this is against the natural order of things<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Intermarriage between the Sethites (sons) and the wicked Cainites (daughters)<\/li><li>Sons of God were royal, corrupt figures<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Secondary Sources on Nephilim<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Using Commentaries to Learn About Nephilim<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NIVApplication-700x394.jpg\" alt=\"NIV Application Commentary\" class=\"wp-image-42274\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NIVApplication-700x394.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NIVApplication-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NIVApplication-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NIVApplication-120x68.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/product.php?productid=45590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"NIV Application Commentary (opens in a new tab)\">NIV Application Commentary<\/a> &#8220;so we will be brief.&#8221; lol not but that&#8217;s ok, because we want info!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First the author covers the three views we&#8217;ve mentioned above. He goes much more in-depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some fun facts we found:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sons of God as angelic beings was the view held unanimously until the second century<\/li><li>Then the intermarriage concept rose to popularity through Augustine\u2019s City of God and soon became the Christian interpretation \u2013 until the nineteenth century<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the author goes really in-depth. We wish we could share everything here with you, but it would be too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/ot-s3-static-p.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/notifications\/nivac.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Seriously, check out just how much information NIVAC had on this topic!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, here&#8217;s a summary:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The angelic view has been around a long time. If we want to consider the Sethite or rulers views, we need to see if there is any reason the angelic view doesn&#8217;t work. Here are three contentions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cohabitation between angels and humans has no immediately obvious connection with the purposes of Genesis;<\/li><li>an angelic intrusion is considered out of place in the sequence of episodes recounting the advance of human sin; and<\/li><li>the mythological tone is at odds with life in the real world as we know it, though in the end our interest is in the world as the Israelites knew it. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes much more sense (in the literary, cultural, and theological context) for &#8220;sons of God&#8221; to point more to &#8220;Sethites&#8221; or &#8220;rulers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Then, the author offers some reasons for why the &#8220;Sethites&#8221; view is flawed:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It ignores the question of the existence of other lines of descent from Adam and Eve<\/li><li>assumes that the lines of Cain and Seth remained separate for millennia<\/li><li>extrapolates from the statements about Enoch and Lamech that the entire line of Seth was godly and the entire line of Cain was wicked<\/li><li>it is much more difficult to see the phrase \u201cdaughters of men\u201d in theological terms referring to females of the line of Cain<\/li><li>Why should \u201cdaughters of men\u201d be used to describe wicked people?<\/li><li>it is difficult to extrapolate the warnings against elect Israel intermarrying and apply them to a group (Sethites) that has not been designated elect<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, he offers even some critiques of the &#8220;rulers&#8221; viewpoint. Essentially, it is difficult to nail down the offense. Is the problem that the rulers were practicing polygamy or being promiscuous? History shows us that perhaps both are the answer.
