The Overarching Purpose of Psalm 25<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To You, O Lord,<\/em>
I lift up my soul.
Psalm 25:1<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although not complete, this is an alphabetical (acrostic) psalm, with the first word of each verse beginning with successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The opening and closing verses (1\u20133, 16\u201322) focus upon David\u2019s pleas for deliverance; the center verses (4\u201315) are more relational, focusing upon David\u2019s regard and desire for God\u2019s teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,

Psalms 25:4-5<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultivating the knowledge of God requires the discipline of waiting upon Him. As used here, \u201cwait\u201d means to \u201cbind together\u201d through a process of intertwining, clearly suggesting the virtual envelopment of the soul with God. To wait upon the Lord is to foster a sensitivity both to His presence and His promptings, which quiets our hearts, focuses our minds through thanksgiving and praise, and allows Him to reveal any subtle attitudes or forgotten sins that would dull our sensitivity to His voice (Ps. 66:18<\/a>). Accept the NT call to fasten the belt of your mind (1 Pet. 1:13<\/a>), meditate on God\u2019s Word, and respond with focused worship. Dedicate times alone with God for waiting and for interaction with Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Praying the Word<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

25:5 truth, \u2019emet; Strong\u2019s #571:<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certainty, stability, truth, rightness, trustworthiness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2019Emet <\/em>derives from the verb \u2019aman<\/em>, meaning \u201cto be firm, permanent, and established.<\/strong>\u201d \u2019Emet<\/em> conveys a sense of dependability, firmness, and reliability. Truth is therefore something upon which a person may confidently stake his life. David prayed that God\u2019s truth would continually preserve him (40:11<\/a>). Scripture speaks of \u201cmen of truth\u201d (Ex. 18:21<\/a>), the \u201claw of truth\u201d (Mal. 2:6<\/a>), and especially the \u201ctrue God [or God of truth]\u201d (Jer. 10:10<\/a>). Curiously, \u2019emet<\/em> is spelled with the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet; thus the rabbis concluded that truth upholds the first and the last of God\u2019s creation<\/strong>, and everything in between!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kingdom Dynamics: Fear of the Lord<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who is<\/em> the man that fears the Lord?
Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.
He himself shall dwell in prosperity,
And his descendants shall inherit the earth.
The secret of the Lord is<\/em> with those who fear Him,
And He will show them His covenant.
My eyes are<\/em> ever toward the Lord,
For He shall pluck my feet out of the net.<\/em>
Psalm 25:12-15<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In every era, godly men and women have practiced the fear of the Lord. The Scriptures reveal several things about the fear of the Lord. It is \u201cclean, enduring forever\u201d (19:9<\/a>). It can be learned (34:11<\/a>). And it is the \u201cbeginning of wisdom\u201d and the \u201cbeginning of knowledge\u201d (111:10<\/a>; Prov. 1:7<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This psalm reveals powerful promises to the one who fears the Lord: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. guidance:<\/strong> \u201cHim shall He teach in the way He chooses\u201d (Ps. 25:12); <\/li>
  2. spiritual prosperity:<\/strong> \u201cHe himself shall dwell in prosperity\u201d (v. 13); <\/li>
  3. future posterity:<\/strong> \u201cHis descendants shall inherit the earth\u201d (v. 13);<\/li>
  4. divine confidant:<\/strong> \u201cThe secret of the LORD is with [them]\u201d (v. 14);<\/li>
  5. covenant:<\/strong> \u201cHe will show them His covenant\u201d (v. 14); <\/li>
  6. deliverance:<\/strong> \u201cHe shall pluck my feet out of the net\u201d (v. 15).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Additional Notes on Psalm 25<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    25:12\u201314<\/em> Four benefits result when the man who has lost his way returns, out of fear (reverent respect), to the way of mercy and truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    25:12<\/em> Or translated, \u201cin the way that He should choose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    25:14<\/em> God reveals His secret counsel in close friendships, as He did to Abraham who feared the LORD (Gen. 18:17\u201319<\/a>), and as He did to the apostles (John 15:15<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    25:15<\/em> Net is a common Hebrew symbol for dangers laid out by an enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    25:16<\/em> Desolate and afflicted are literally \u201calone and poor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    25:18<\/em> David realizes that inward sins make the soul more susceptible to attacks from the enemy without.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    25:22<\/em> King David\u2019s problems are his kingdom\u2019s problems as well; thus he pleads for Israel too. Redeem here means to deliver from physical bondage primarily, but verses such as these may have a spiritual application from the NT perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
