It could be exciting, nerve-wracking, relieving, and terrifying &#8211; all rolled into one. If you moved back in with your parents after college or visited old friends from school or work, maybe you&#8217;ve felt apprehension along with your anticipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Luke+4%3A16-30&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 4:16-30<\/a>, Jesus returns to his hometown of Nazareth and has a less-than-welcoming reception. If you&#8217;re wondering why Jesus&#8217; own town rejected him, you&#8217;re in the right place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d0d0d0\"><strong>We will be using the <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/product.php?productid=16869\" target=\"_blank\">Bible Knowledge Commentary<\/a><\/em> for background information.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arrival\">Arrival<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the beginning of this story, Jesus arrives at Nazareth, his childhood home town. Because he was a popular teacher, he taught at the synagogue on the Sabbath. He stood up and read <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Isaiah+61%3A1-2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Isaiah 61:1-2<\/a>, which says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Spirit of the Lord is on me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0because he has anointed me<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to proclaim good news\u00a0to the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and recovery of sight for the blind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to set the oppressed free,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Isaiah 61:1-2 as quoted in Luke 4:18-19<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-interpretation\">Interpretation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This reading was significant because Jesus stopped in the middle of Isaiah 6:2 without reading the next line about God&#8217;s vengeance. When Jesus added, &#8220;Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing&#8221;, Jesus implied that he was the Messiah who could bring the long-awaited kingdom of God without the impending judgement yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conflict\">Conflict<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens next is interesting &#8211; first, they were amazed at his &#8220;gracious words&#8221;, then they immediately began questioning his authority and honor. How could Joseph&#8217;s son &#8211; the boy they saw grow up in their town &#8211; be the Messiah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\"><em>It&#8217;s one thing to come home with a college degree or spouse (like I, this article writer did), but Jesus was definitely in a unique position!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rebuke\">Rebuke<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default has-border-color has-text-color\" style=\"border-color:#81a55b;border-width:17px;border-radius:0px;color:#81a55b\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;Truly I tell you,&#8221; he continued, &#8220;no prophet is accepted in his hometown.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Luke 4:24<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus, sensing their opposition, noted two instances in which God&#8217;s prophets ministered miraculous acts of grace to <strong>Gentiles<\/strong> while <strong>Israel was in unbelief<\/strong> &#8211; Elijah and the widow of Zarephath (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Kings+17%3A8-16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Kings 17:8-16<\/a>), and Elisha and Naaman the Syrian leper (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Kings+5%3A1-19&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Kings 5:1-19<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rejection\">Rejection<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The people were furious with Jesus&#8217; mention of Gentiles rather than Jews having God&#8217;s blessing. In their anger, they confirmed Christ&#8217;s claim of Israel&#8217;s unbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>They got up, drove him out of the town,\u00a0and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>They attempted to kill him but he walked right through the crowd! Luke no doubt described a <strong>miraculous escape<\/strong> from an angry crowd. This pattern is seen throughout the rest of Jesus&#8217; ministry: Jesus went to the Jews; they rejected Him; He told of Gentile participation in the kingdom; some Jews wanted to kill Him. But He was not killed until the proper time, when He chose to die (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Luke+23%3A46&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luke 23:46<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d0d0d0\">What do you think of this passage?
