On a purely subjective level, I think dreams are one of the strangest experiences we have as humans. They often defy many of the rules that govern our everyday lives and clearly do not \u201cmake sense\u201d in our logical world. Dreams are sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often confusing enough to leave me bewildered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, I recognize that God frequently uses dreams throughout the Bible. One way to discover the prevalence of dreams in the Bible is by using Olive Tree\u2019s Bible Topic Threads<\/a>. Dreams Can Provide Warnings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

32 Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the LORD, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the LORD.<\/p>Jeremiah 23:32<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

8 Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.<\/p>Jude 8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Dreams Can Prophesy of Future Events<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

5 Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, \u201cHear this dream that I have dreamed: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.\u201d 8 His brothers said to him, \u201cAre you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?\u201d So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.<\/p>Genesis 37:5-8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

5 And one night they both dreamed\u2014the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison\u2014each his own dream, and each dream with its own interpretation. 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, \u201cWhy are your faces downcast today?\u201d 8 They said to him, \u201cWe have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.\u201d And Joseph said to them, \u201cDo not interpretations belong to God? 1 In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his spirit was troubled, and his sleep left him. 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these: 29 To you, O king, as you lay in bed came thoughts of what would be after this, and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to be. <\/p>Daniel 2:1, 28-29<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Dreams Can Give Promises<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, \u201cI am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth . . . and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.\u201d<\/p>Genesis 28:12-15<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, \u201cAsk what I shall give you.\u201d 9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?\u201d 15 And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.<\/p>1 Kings 3:5, 9, 15<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Dreams Can Be a Means of Revelation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

5 And the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. 6 And he said, \u201cHear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house.<\/p>Numbers 12:5-7<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets . . . 15 Then Samuel said to Saul, \u201cWhy have you disturbed me by bringing me up?\u201d Saul answered, \u201cI am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do.\u201d<\/p>1 Samuel 28:6,15<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
