The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge<\/a> (NTSK) is like a cross-reference library but bigger and better. With over 600,000 cross-references, the NTSK averages 20 cross-references per verse of the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, the NTSK uses symbols and abbreviations to provide information about the cross-references. \u201cThe New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge<\/a> probably has more cross-references than you could hope to consult in a lifetime of use. Yet that is the very heart of its advantage over other study tools\u2014it is an inexhaustible study resource.\u201d<\/p>NTSK<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Inspiration for the NTSK<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The verse that provided the inspiration for James H. Smith to purchase the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge<\/a> for himself was 2 Timothy 1:7<\/a>. In the KJV, this verse says, \u201cFor God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.\u201d This verse and the references listed for it were what God used to begin his journey of updating this resource, a journey that he wouldn\u2019t complete until nearly forty years later. Let\u2019s look at these references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spirit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is the Greek word pneuma<\/em>, which is labeled a figure of speech for metonymy of the cause. The Spirit is put also for His quickening, regenerating, and sanctifying work in man, in creating the new nature with its spiritual desires and powers (cf. Ps 51:10<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; <\/p>Isaiah 11:2<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. <\/p>Acts 20:24<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. <\/p>Acts 21:13<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. <\/p>Romans 8:15<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Of Fear<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. <\/p>Genesis 19:30<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. <\/p>Psalms 34:4<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. <\/p>Isaiah 12:2<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.<\/p>John 14:27<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. <\/p>1 John 4:18<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. <\/p>Revelation 21:8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The word is marked as a figure of speech. It is an ellipsis of supply, where the omission of connected words is to be supplied by repeating them out of a preceding clause (cf. Nu 26:3<\/a>). \u201cBut (God hath given to us the spirit).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of Power<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin. <\/p>Micah 3:8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. <\/p>Zechariah 4:6<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. <\/p>Luke 10:19<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. <\/p>Luke 24:49<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. <\/p>Acts 1:8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. <\/p>Acts 6:8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. <\/p>Acts 9:22<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. <\/p>Acts 10:38<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. <\/p>1 Corinthians 2:4-5<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Of Love<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. <\/p>Romans 5:5<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, <\/p>Galatians 5:22<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. <\/p>Colossians 1:8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: <\/p>1 Peter 1:22<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A Sound Mind<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. <\/p>2 Timothy 1:13<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed. <\/p>Psalms 119:80<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. <\/p>Proverbs 2:7<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred. <\/p>Hosea 9:7<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. <\/p>Luke 8:35<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. <\/p>Acts 26:25<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: <\/p>2 Corinthians 5:13-14<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This is the Greek word sophronismou<\/em>, used only here in the NT. The word means self-discipline, self control, and prudence in living a \u201cmeasured and orderly life\u201d (TDNT). The concept connected with the word group to which this word belongs has reference to living soberly and righteously in this present world in watchful expectation of Christ\u2019s coming, as well as reference to avoidance of ecstatic and eschatological frenzy. Trench remarks of the related word sophrosunee<\/em> at 1 Ti 2:9<\/a> that it refers to \u201cthat inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
