He says, \u201cYou who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.\u201d What does it mean to fall away from grace? The verse is clearly implying that those who are looking to the law for their justification are separating themselves from Christ. They are also turning away from God\u2019s provision of grace in the cross of Christ (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gal+1%3A6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gal. 1:6<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gal+2%3A21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2:21<\/a>). How should we understand the topic of backsliding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to learn more about backsliding, so I turned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/product.php?productid=65484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NIV Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible<\/a>. Since we\u2019re interested in learning more about backsliding, we\u2019ll tap on Topic Number 993. You\u2019ll see a brief definition of backsliding. In this case, backsliding is \u201creverting to sin and wrongdoing.\u201d Additionally, the following chain (Topic Number 994) is also labeled backsliding. But that chain addresses backsliding from the perspective of the \u201ccauses which tend to produce\u201d it. The perspective of backsliding from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gal+5%3A4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Galatians 5:4<\/a> (Topic Number 993) is focused on the results of it. The main Scripture references to the topic of backsliding are in <strong>bold<\/strong>. These are the references included under the different categories of backsliding. Let\u2019s look at the categories and references under the topic of backsliding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backsliding Results in Selfish Absorption<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good rewarded for theirs. <\/p><cite>Proverbs 14:14<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. <\/p><cite>Isaiah 1:4<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Although our sins testify against us, do something, LORD, for the sake of your name. For we have often rebelled; we have sinned against you. <\/p><cite>Jeremiah 14:7<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The Israelites are stubborn, like a stubborn heifer. How then can the LORD pasture them like lambs in a meadow? <\/p><cite>Hosea 4:16<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them. <\/p><cite>Hosea 11:7<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>These verses describe a bleak picture. God\u2019s people are described as faithless, forsaking the Lord, rebellious, stubborn, and determined to turn from him. One of the implications of this is that backsliding is not a slow drift, but a sinful departure from the Lord and his ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backsliding Results in Religious Indifference<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, <\/p><cite>Matthew 24:12<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus speaks of the rampant wickedness of the last days that will lead to a decrease in love among the saints. Another way to say it is that lovelessness increases in proportion to the increase of wickedness. Love for one another is all the more difficult where there is apostasy, false teaching, and many who fall away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backsliding Results in Unfitness for the Kingdom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Jesus replied, \u201cNo one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/p><cite>Luke 9:62<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel\u2014 <\/p><cite>Galatians 1:6<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker. <\/p><cite>Galatians 2:18<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, again, we see that backsliding is described in some fairly stark ways. Backsliders are unfit, deserters, and lawbreakers. We should notice in the second reference that Paul describes the Galatians as deserting \u201cthe one who called you.\u201d In turning to \u201ca different gospel\u201d they were turning their backs on God! This is a similar description to the references we saw above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backsliding Results in Bondage to Forms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.olivetree.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_036C24FA3E8A-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_036C24FA3E8A-1-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_036C24FA3E8A-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_036C24FA3E8A-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_036C24FA3E8A-1-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>But now that you know God\u2014or rather are known by God\u2014how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? <\/p><cite>Galatians 4:9<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Once God has called us to freedom, any departure from that will lead to bondage. This is the basis of Paul\u2019s appeal in this reference. Do you want to go back to being slaves again? The results of backsliding are not a different form of freedom, but the same old slavery you were rescued from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backsliding Results in Divine Displeasure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>And, \u201cBut my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.\u201d <\/p><cite>Hebrews 10:38<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. <\/p><cite>2 Peter 2:20<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we know that God delights in his Son (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Matt+3%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matt. 3:17<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Matt+17%3A5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17:5<\/a>) and his people (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=ps+149%3A4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ps. 149:4<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=zeph+3%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zeph. 3:17<\/a>), these references are quite the judgment against those who backslide. God delights in those who persevere, who \u201clive by faith.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backsliding Results in Loss of Spiritual Enthusiasm<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. <\/p><cite>Revelation 2:4<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is similar to the above reference about their love growing cold. I think that was referring to their love for one another. Is that what Jesus is describing here? Are the saints shrinking back from their love for one another, a love he admits they had at first? It could be referring to their love for God and the good works that flowed from that love (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rev+2%3A5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rev. 2:5<\/a>).
