Revelation of God<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

God is the all-powerful, all-knowing, morally perfect Creator of the universe; and we are his creatures\u2014no less, but also no more. Thus, an unimaginable distance must exist between God and us. The biblical writers note our creaturely limitations and God\u2019s transcendence. But God has made himself known in two general ways, according to Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psalm 19:1\u20136<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The heavens declare the glory of God,<\/p>

and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands.<\/p>

2 Day after day they pour out speech;<\/p>

night after night they communicate knowledge.<\/p>

3 There is no speech; there are no words;<\/p>

their voice is not heard.<\/p>

4 Their message has gone out to the whole earth,<\/p>

and their words to the ends of the world.<\/p>

In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun.<\/p>

5 It is like a bridegroom coming from his home;<\/p>

it rejoices like an athlete running a course.<\/p>

6 It rises from one end of the heavens<\/p>

and circles to their other end;<\/p>

nothing is hidden from its heat.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s heavenly creation sings forth his message nonstop (19:1\u20132<\/a>). Throughout the earth, the sun daily blazes God\u2019s truth for all to see (19:3\u20136<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Revelation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The biblical writers expect each of us to grasp something of God\u2019s nature, based on what is called \u201cgeneral revelation.\u201d General revelation operates in a broadcasted way, so to speak, relying on commonplace experience to make us aware of God\u2019s existence and nature. We all see the heavens that \u201cdeclare the glory of God\u201d (Ps 19:1<\/a>). Paul argues that every person can detect the \u201cinvisible attributes\u201d of God, his \u201ceternal power and divine nature,\u201d in what he has created, so that we have no excuse for decadent theology and behavior (Rm 1:20<\/a>). The law of God is \u201cwritten on [our] hearts\u201d (Rm 2:15<\/a>), so that we grasp what we owe to him and each other. Even though God has not spoken directly to every nation, \u201che did not leave himself without a witness\u201d; he has shown all people \u201cwhat is good by giving [them] rain from heaven and fruitful seasons\u201d (Ac 14:17<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can learn some things about God from these sources given to us, and thus we are accountable for right conduct in relationship to them. However, general revelation lacks the detail and assurance of what is called \u201cspecial revelation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psalm 19:7\u201311<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The instruction of the LORD is perfect,<\/p>

renewing one\u2019s life;<\/p>

the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy,<\/p>

making the inexperienced wise.<\/p>

8 The precepts of the LORD are right,<\/p>

making the heart glad;<\/p>

the command of the LORD is radiant,<\/p>

making the eyes light up.<\/p>

9 The fear of the LORD is pure,<\/p>

enduring forever;<\/p>

the ordinances of the LORD are reliable<\/p>

and altogether righteous.<\/p>

10 They are more desirable than gold \u2014<\/p>

than an abundance of pure gold;<\/p>

and sweeter than honey<\/p>

dripping from a honeycomb.<\/p>

11 In addition, your servant is warned by them,<\/p>

and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s written word is also a faithful proclaimer of God\u2019s message. Utilizing synonymous parallelism (19:7\u20139<\/a>), David cites six names by which God\u2019s word is known: \u201cinstruction,\u201d \u201ctestimony,\u201d \u201cprecepts,\u201d \u201ccommand,\u201d \u201cfear,\u201d and \u201cordinances.\u201d Five of these six names are commonly recognized; the sixth, \u201cthe fear of the LORD,\u201d is not. David clearly wants his readers to recognize God\u2019s word as an awesome terror to be reckoned with. David also highlights numerous benefits of knowing and applying God\u2019s word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special Revelation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Special revelation differs from general revelation in having a target audience. It conveys information about God, human beings, and our world that cannot be deduced from everyday experience. Jesus suffered for our sins. Our trust in his death on the cross will save us. God is a Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, though there is one God. Christ will return in power and glory to judge all nations. We can think of God as our heavenly Father, a morally perfect deity who cares about the individual person. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness as we wonder how to pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God is always sovereign, even over the wicked deeds of human beings and the suffering that they cause. These are essential points of Christian doctrine. Yet we cannot substantiate any of them by carefully observing ourselves, our world, or the facts of history. Indeed, sometimes our own thoughts lead us to resist these claims because they entail great mysteries. One can easily (but wrongly) equate \u201cI do not understand this\u201d with \u201cThis is false.\u201d Thus, our knowledge of these doctrines rests on God\u2019s willingness to speak and our readiness to hear what he says with humility and trust, without having all our questions answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psalm 19:12\u201314<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who perceives his unintentional sins?<\/p>

Cleanse me from my hidden faults.<\/p>

13 Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins;<\/p>

do not let them rule me.<\/p>

Then I will be blameless<\/p>

and cleansed from blatant rebellion.<\/p>

14 May the words of my mouth<\/p>

and the meditation of my heart<\/p>

be acceptable to you,<\/p>

LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

David concludes by expressing his desire that God\u2019s word and ways would reign in his heart and that God would be pleased with all that he thinks and does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
