\u201cSell everything you have.\u201d<\/em> The words from the one he addressed as \u201cgood teacher\u201d hit him hard, a blow to his heartfelt desire to possess yet one more thing \u2013 eternal life. Jesus said that he\u2019d have to give everything up, everything that gave his life significance, meaning, importance, and status, to have eternal life. And he knew that he couldn\u2019t bring himself to do it. For him on his own, it was impossible. He had \u201cgreat wealth,\u201d but he still left sad and dejected because he refused to let go of these things to have \u201ctreasure in heaven.\u201d Eternal life proved out of reach as he turned his back on Jesus and went home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dramatic exchange in the gospel of Mark has it all \u2013 desperation, high stakes, love, shock value, humor, and amazement.  Let\u2019s learn more about Jesus\u2019 challenge to the rich young man in Mark 10:17\u201331<\/a> with these questions<\/strong> and answers<\/strong> from the NIV Quest Study Bible<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did Jesus say salvation comes by obeying the commandments?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. \u201cGood teacher,\u201d he asked, \u201cwhat must I do to inherit eternal life?\u201d \u201cWhy do you call me good?\u201d Jesus answered. \u201cNo one is good\u2014except God alone. You know the commandments: \u2018You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.\u2019\u201d <\/p>Mark 10:17-19<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

No. Jesus\u2019 response focused on obedience to God\u2019s law because this provided a familiar starting point for all who lived under God\u2019s old covenant. This young man was badly mistaken, however, if he assumed eternal life could be gained by his superior ethical performance, for none of us are good enough to earn salvation by our own good works (Gal. 3:23\u201329<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could we lose our eternal reward by lacking just one thing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTeacher,\u201d he declared, \u201call these I have kept since I was a boy.\u201d Jesus looked at him and loved him. \u201cOne thing you lack,\u201d he said. \u201cGo, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.\u201d At this the man\u2019s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. <\/p>Mark 10:20-22<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Though we all fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23<\/a>), God\u2019s grace covers our spiritual deficit. However, some never apply God\u2019s grace to their spiritual need. Jesus knew this man had allowed worldly wealth to take precedence over God.<\/strong> Unless we give God first place in our life, we are really giving him no place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should Christians sell their possessions and give to the poor?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This young man was overly attached to his possessions, so Jesus challenged him to sacrifice in the one crucial area that kept him from following Christ.<\/strong> Yet there is great value in living a simple and contented life and at times we do need to sell or share our belongings in order to help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How could a camel fit through the eye of a needle?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, \u201cHow hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!\u201d The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, \u201cChildren, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d <\/p>Mark 10:23-25<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Jesus\u2019 analogy painted an amusing picture of something impossible or absurd<\/strong> by human standards. The disciples probably saw material wealth as a certain sign of God\u2019s favor\u2014but Jesus recognized how the love of money creates temptations many cannot resist. No sinner, whether rich or poor, \u201cdeserves\u201d to enter the kingdom of heaven. But God\u2019s grace can overcome seemingly impossible obstacles. What is impossible with man is possible with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did Jesus mean by a camel going through the eye of a needle?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some have dealt with this verse in ingenious ways: They suggest that the word camel should have been translated rope or that the eye of the needle was a nickname for a low, after-hours gate in the wall of Jerusalem. It\u2019s probably better, however, to see this as a hyperbole, a figure of speech that exaggerates for emphasis. Jesus\u2019 point was that some things on earth can prevent us from entering the kingdom of God. His impossible example was meant to raise a note of alarm: Wealth can be dangerous to our spiritual lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Jesus want us to abandon our families?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Jesus looked at them and said, \u201cWith man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.\u201d Then Peter spoke up, \u201cWe have left everything to follow you!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTruly I tell you,\u201d Jesus replied, \u201cno one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields\u2014along with persecutions\u2014and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.\u201d <\/p>Mark 10:26-31<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As he did in 9:43\u201347<\/a>, Jesus uses overstatement to make his point. The love Jesus asks of his followers cannot compare to other earthly relationships (see Matt. 10:37, 39<\/a>; Luke 14:26\u201333<\/a>). It takes first priority. Yet, putting Christ at the center of our lives does not compromise our other relationships; it enhances them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What guarantee comes with our commitment to follow Christ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We aren\u2019t guaranteed prosperity, nor do we gain a hefty spiritual stock portfolio with guaranteed returns when we serve God. Realistically, there will be problems and perhaps a high price to pay. But we are promised a priceless relationship, better than the love of a family, if we choose to follow him.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
