I was recently reading Romans and encountered a statement Paul makes about Abraham. He says, \u201c[Abraham] received circumcision as a sign,<\/strong> a seal<\/strong> of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised\u201d (Rom. 4:11<\/a>). Paul makes this pivotal point, that Abraham was credited with righteousness prior to his circumcision, to defend the forgiveness and justification of the Gentiles on the basis of faith and not obedience to the law. But what drew my attention was Paul\u2019s description of circumcision as a sign<\/strong> and seal<\/strong>.
