Are there things that we can do to enhance the presence of the peace of God in our lives? R. Kent Hughes says yes! In his commentary on Philippians<\/a> in the Preaching the Word Commentary<\/a>, he unpacks Paul\u2019s exhortation to think on the types of virtues that will increase our experience of God\u2019s protective and preserving peace. Let\u2019s see what these virtues are and learn how he applies them to the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thoughts that Invite the Peace of God<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. <\/p>Philippians 4:8<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Paul exhorted the Philippians to embrace exalted thought patterns and practices that would enhance God\u2019s presence and peace, as he promised in verse 9<\/a>: \u201cWhat you have learned and received and heard and seen in me \u2014 practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that these six rhythmically arranged virtues are qualities that the Greco-Roman culture itself held high. \u201cPaul now offers a cross-cultural Christian exhortation in the language of Philippi\u201d (Bockmuehl). Paul took terms that were current in moral philosophy and pressed them into service for Christianity. This was moral language that the surrounding pagan culture could understand. Christian virtues are consonant with the general goodness non-Christian cultures recognize. However, at the same time, as Peter T. O\u2019Brien points out, Paul\u2019s \u201cappeal is not to some pagan religious ideal, nor to an acceptance of Stoic presupposition lying behind the ideas, much less to some wholesale acceptance of the norms and values of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six parallel clauses are high-sounding in the Greek and together evoke a stately impressiveness. We will briefly touch on each of these six elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtue #1 \u2013 Whatever is True<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

First, the Philippians must contemplate \u201cwhatever is true,\u201d which here means truth in the broadest, most comprehensive sense. For followers of Christ, truth begins with his divine person as God the Son, the embodiment of truth. He is all truth, and his gospel is truth \u2014 \u201cthe word of the truth, the gospel\u201d (Colossians 1:5<\/a>). God\u2019s word, he says, \u201cis truth\u201d (John 17:17<\/a>). Everything that is true is from God because all truth is God\u2019s truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, a mind that contemplates what is true not only sees Christ, the Word, and the gospel but also rationally engages his creation, rejects irrational thinking, and speaks the truth. This mind seeks \u201cwhatever is true\u201d in every avenue of life, from faith to science to relationships to public life to business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtue #2 \u2013 Whatever is Honorable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Second, Paul\u2019s readers must focus on \u201cwhatever is honorable.\u201d The Greek word here translated honorable is used variously in the Pastoral Epistles to teach what those who are older and in leadership must be like (cf. Titus 2:2<\/a>; 1 Timothy 3:8<\/a>, 11<\/a>). So the word signifies a personal moral excellence that is dignified and worthy of honor. This is the meaning here in Philippians 4:8<\/a> \u2014 a noble life of spiritual gravitas that evokes honor. It is the opposite of ignoble. The Philippians are to focus on whatever is dignified and noble and honorable and to aspire to such character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtue #3 \u2013 Whatever is Just<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Third, they were to concentrate on \u201cwhatever is just.\u201d For Paul, that which is \u201cjust\u201d or \u201cright\u201d is defined by the character of God. But he also used \u201cjust\u201d or \u201cright\u201d in the sense of right thought or action (cf. 1:7<\/a>), and this broad sense was in view here. The Philippians were to contemplate the things that make for just living \u2014 doing the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtue #4 \u2013 Whatever is Pure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, the readers were to focus on \u201cwhatever is pure.\u201d This is not limited to sexual purity but extends to all areas of moral purity in thought and speech and actions. They were to focus on that which is not tainted with evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtue #5 \u2013 Whatever is Lovely<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, the Philippians were to contemplate \u201cwhatever is lovely.\u201d By \u201clovely\u201d Paul means those things that put themselves forward by their attractiveness. \u201cLovely\u201d includes not only what is morally lovely but what is aesthetically lovely \u2014 \u201call that is beautiful in creation and in human lives\u201d \u2014 from a sunset to a symphony to caring for the poor and powerless \u2014 all things beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtue #6 \u2013 Whatever is Commendable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sixth, Paul\u2019s readers were to consider \u201cwhatever is commendable,\u201d which refers to the kind of conduct that other people speak highly of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary Command<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These six qualities together form a stunning rhythmic portrait of the mental focus and aspirations that Paul desired for his readers \u2014 \u201cwhatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable\u201d \u2014 a truly stunning portrait of how we must think, which Paul then framed with a comprehensive summary and command: \u201cif there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things\u201d (v. 8b<\/a>). Nothing of moral excellence and nothing that would earn the praise of God or man must be left out of the Philippians\u2019 contemplation. And the command is ongoing: \u201cThink [continually] on these things\u201d \u2014 let your mind continually dwell on these things. Ponder them without ceasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we apply these truths to ourselves, we must understand that this text has always been relentlessly demanding. The sheer weight of Paul\u2019s six positives demands the rejection of negative input. Listen to their inversion: \u201cFinally brothers, whatever is untrue, whatever is dishonorable, whatever is unjust, whatever is impure, whatever is unlovely, whatever is uncommendable, if there is anything not morally excellent, if there is anything unworthy of praise, do not think about these things.\u201d Paul\u2019s command calls for a life of conscious negation. Thinking as we ought demands the discipline of refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here again Paul\u2019s charge to think about whatever is \u201ctrue\u201d and \u201chonorable\u201d and \u201cjust\u201d and \u201cpure\u201d and \u201clovely\u201d and \u201ccommendable\u201d is powerfully phrased because \u201cthink about these things\u201d uses the word logizomai,<\/em> from which we get the mathematical word logarithm. Paul commands the same deliberate, prolonged contemplation of these virtues that it takes to weigh a mathematical problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
