As a result of the believer\u2019s union with Christ, they are to <strong>put <\/strong>some things <strong>to death,<\/strong> <strong>put off<\/strong> some things that they used to wear, and <strong>put on<\/strong> new things that resemble the new humanity. Let\u2019s see what these things are with John MacArthur\u2019s notes on this passage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/store\/product.php?productid=43571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MacArthur Study Bible (NIV)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Put to Death<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPut to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite>Colossians 3:5\u20137<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Put to death.<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rom+8%3A13&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 8:13<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Zec+4%3A6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zec 4:6<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+5%3A18&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 5:18<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+6%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6:17<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Jn+2%3A14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Jn 2:14<\/a>. This refers to a conscious effort to slay the remaining sin in our flesh. <strong>immorality.<\/strong> This refers to any form of sexual sin (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gal+5%3A19&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gal 5:19<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Th+4%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Th 4:3<\/a>). <strong>impurity.<\/strong> This term goes beyond sexual acts of sin to encompass evil thoughts and intentions as well (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Mt+5%3A28&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mt 5:28<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Mk+7%3A21-22&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mk 7:21, 22<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Th+4%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Th 4:7<\/a>). <strong>lust, evil desires.<\/strong> Similar terms that refer to sexual passion. \u201cLust\u201d is the physical side of that vice, and \u201cevil desires\u201d is the mental side (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+1%3A26&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 1:26<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+1%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jas 1:15<\/a>). <strong>greed.<\/strong> Lit. this term means \u201cto have more.\u201d It is the insatiable desire to gain more, especially of things that are forbidden (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ex+20%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ex 20:17<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Dt+5%3A21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dt 5:21<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+4%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jas 4:2<\/a>). <strong>which is idolatry.<\/strong> When people engage in either greed or the sexual sins Paul has cataloged, they follow their desires rather than God\u2019s, in essence worshiping themselves\u2014which is idolatry (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Num+25%3A1-3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nu 25:1\u20133<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+5%3A3-5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 5:3\u20135<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wrath of God.<\/strong> His constant, invariable reaction against sin (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jn+3%3A36&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jn 3:36<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+1%3A18&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 1:18<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rev+11%3A18&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rev 11:18<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You used to walk in these ways.<\/strong> Before their conversion (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+2%3A1-5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 2:1\u20135<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Tit+3%3A3-4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Titus 3:3, 4<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Put Off Your Dirty Clothes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBut now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite>Colossians 3:8<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rid yourselves.<\/strong> A Gr. word used for taking off clothes (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ac+7%3A58&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ac 7:58<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rom+13%3A12-14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 13:12\u201314<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Pe+2%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Pe 2:1<\/a>). Like one who removes his dirty clothes at day\u2019s end, believers must discard the filthy garments of their old, sinful lives. <strong>anger.<\/strong> A deep, smoldering bitterness; the settled heart attitude of an angry person (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+4%3A31&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 4:31<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+1%3A19-20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jas 1:19, 20<\/a>). <strong>rage.<\/strong> Unlike God\u2019s settled and righteous rage (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+1%3A18&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 1:18<\/a>), this is a sudden outburst of sinful anger, usually the eruption that flows out of \u201canger\u201d (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Gal+5%3A20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gal 5:20<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Lk+4%3A28&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lk 4:28<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ac+19%3A28&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ac 19:28<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+4%3A31&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 4:31<\/a>). <strong>malice.<\/strong> From the Gr. term that denotes general moral evil. Here it probably refers to the damage caused by evil speech. <strong>slander.<\/strong> The normal translation when this word refers to God is \u201cblasphemy.\u201d But here, since it refers to people, it is better translated \u201cslander.\u201d To slander people, however, is to blaspheme God (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Matt+5%3A22&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mt 5:22<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+3%3A9-10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jas 3:9\u201310<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Put On the New Man<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDo not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite>Colossians 3:9\u201310<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taken off . . . put on.<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Col+3%3A8&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">v. 8<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+4%3A24-25&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 4:24, 25<\/a>. These words are the basis for the command of v. 8. Because the old man died in Christ, and the new man lives in Christ\u2014because that is the fact of new creation or regeneration (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Cor+5%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2Co 5:17<\/a>)\u2014believers must put off remaining sinful deeds and be continually renewed into the Christlikeness to which they are called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Old self.<\/strong> The old, unregenerate self, originating in Adam (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+5%3A12-14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 5:12\u201314<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+6%3A6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6:6<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+4%3A22&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 4:22<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New self.<\/strong> The new, regenerate self, which replaces the old self; this is the essence of what believers are in Christ (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+4%3A17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 4:17<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+5%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5:1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+5%3A8&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+5%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15<\/a>). The reason believers still sin is their unredeemed flesh (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+6%3A6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 6:6<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+6%3A12&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+7%3A5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7:5<\/a>). <strong>renewed.<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Cor+4%3A16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2Co 4:16<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Rom+12%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 12:2<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Co+3%3A18&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2Co 3:18<\/a>. This Gr. verb contains a sense of contrast with the former reality. It describes a new quality of life that never before existed. Just like a baby is born complete but immature, the new self is complete, but has the capacity to grow. <strong>knowledge.<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Col+1%3A9&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1:9<\/a>. A deep, thorough knowledge, without which there can be no spiritual growth or renewal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Ti+3%3A16-17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2Ti 3:16, 17<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Pe+2%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Pe 2:2<\/a>). <strong>image of its Creator.<\/strong> It is God\u2019s plan that believers become progressively more like Jesus Christ, the one who made them (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+8%3A29&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 8:29<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Cor+15%3A49&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Co 15:49<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Jn+3%3A2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Jn 3:2<\/a>). See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Php+3%3A12-14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Php 3:12\u201314<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Php+3%3A19-20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19, 20<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clothe Yourselves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTherefore, as God\u2019s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite>Colossians 3:12<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Therefore.<\/strong> In view of what God has done through Jesus Christ for the believer, Paul describes the behavior and attitude God expects in response (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Col+3%3A12-17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vv. 12\u201317<\/a>). <strong>God\u2019s chosen people.<\/strong> This designates true Christians as those who have been chosen by God. No one is converted solely by his own choice, but only in response to God\u2019s effectual, free, uninfluenced, and sovereign grace (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jn+15%3A16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jn 15:16<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+8%3A29&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 8:29<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+9%3A14-23&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9:14\u201323<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+1%3A4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 1:4<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Th+2%3A13-14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2Th 2:13, 14<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=2+Ti+1%3A8-9&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2Ti 1:8, 9<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=1+Pe+1%3A1-2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1Pe 1:1, 2<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ac+13%3A46-48&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ac 13:46\u201348<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+11%3A4-5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 11:4, 5<\/a>). <strong>dearly loved.<\/strong> Election means believers are the objects of God\u2019s incomprehensible special love (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jn+13%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jn 13:1<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Eph+1%3A4-5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eph 1:4, 5<\/a>). <strong>clothe yourselves.<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Col+3%3A9-10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vv. 9, 10<\/a>. <strong>compassion.<\/strong> Lit. \u201cinternal organs of compassion.\u201d It is a Hebraism that connotes the internal organs of the human body as used figuratively to describe the seat of the emotions (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Mt+9%3A36&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mt 9:36<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Lk+6%3A36&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lk 6:36<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+5%3A11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jas 5:11<\/a>). <strong>kindness.<\/strong> Refers to a goodness toward others that pervades the entire person, mellowing all harsh aspects (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Mt+11%3A29-30&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mt 11:29, 30<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Lk+10%3A25-37&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lk 10:25\u201337<\/a>). <strong>humility.<\/strong> See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+12%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ro 12:3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Ro+12%3A10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Php+2%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Php 2:3<\/a>; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Mt+18%3A4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mt 18:4<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jn+13%3A14-16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jn 13:14\u201316<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+4%3A6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jas 4:6<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olivetree.com\/bible\/?query=Jas+4%3A10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10<\/a>.
