The core of the apostolic message of salvation is Jesus\u2019 death and resurrection. This is evident throughout the book of Acts as Jesus\u2019 witnesses spread this message to the ends of the earth. Let\u2019s look at one example of this from the ministry of Paul in Pisidian Antioch (Acts 13<\/a>). We\u2019ll see that Paul\u2019s Sabbath sermon shows how the death and resurrection of Jesus is the fulfillment of God\u2019s promises of salvation. We adapted the following notes from the IVP New Testament Commentary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Word of Salvation: Christological Fulfillment (Acts 13:26\u201331<\/a>)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With greater intimacy (brothers<\/em>) Paul readdresses his audience, proclaiming the promise\u2019s fulfillment. To us, as opposed to the patriarchs, this message of salvation<\/em> (literally, \u201cthe message of this salvation\u201d) has been sent by God<\/em> (not simply from Jerusalem; compare Lk 24:49<\/a>; Gal 4:4, 6<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central events of the kerygma, Jesus\u2019 death and resurrection, now come into view. Paul emphasizes three features of Jesus\u2019 death: its cause,<\/strong> its character<\/strong> and its reality.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Cause.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Inhabitants of Jerusalem, ignorant of Jesus\u2019 messiahship and of the Scriptures (NIV does not represent this parallelism), fulfilled those very Scriptures by condemning him to death and making sure Pilate carried out the sentence. Though they were immediately culpable, ultimately God ordained it. He had planned it long ago and declared it through the prophets (Acts 2:23<\/a>; 4:28<\/a>; 3:17\u201318<\/a>). It came to a complete fulfillment (Lk 12:50<\/a>; 18:31<\/a>; 22:37<\/a>; 24:44<\/a>). The people\u2019s ignorance was not simply a lack of knowledge but \u201ca false understanding, a false path in knowing and thinking\u201d that led them to turn away from a relationship to God in Jesus Christ (compare Rom 10:3<\/a>; 2 Cor 3:14\u20134:6<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the great ironies of our sinful human existence is that religion can make us blind to the true way of salvation. Even years of studying the Bible can leave us without understanding of the liberation Christ desires to bring. The experience of the people of Jerusalem in Jesus\u2019 day must ever stand as a warning to the religious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Character.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some fault Luke for not presenting Jesus\u2019 death as a substitutionary atonement. Yet critics fail to take into account that when Luke notes Jesus\u2019 death as an innocent sufferer, he is presenting the objective conditions of vicarious atonement. For unless his death was a waste, a perverse miscarriage of justice, Jesus had to be suffering the penalty for someone\u2019s sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here Paul maintains Jesus\u2019 innocence: no proper ground for a death sentence.<\/em> Pilate declared as much three times during the proceedings (the charges\u2014Lk 23:2, 5<\/a>; the governor\u2019s judgment\u2014Acts 23:4<\/a>, Acts 23:14\u201315<\/a>, Acts 23:22<\/a>; compare Acts 3:13\u201314<\/a>). Jesus even received a proper burial (compare Lk 23:53, 55<\/a>). At the same time Paul portrays Jesus\u2019 suffering as that of a criminal\u2014he was condemned by the Jews, who requested a Roman execution for him, and he was crucified (hanging on the tree<\/em> was a cursed death; compare Gal 3:13<\/a>\/Deut 21:23<\/a>; Acts 5:30<\/a>; 10:39<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Reality.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To mention Jesus\u2019 burial is to affirm the reality of his physical death, a truth on which many ancient and modern heresies stumble. Note how later Paul recalls it as an essential of the gospel (1 Cor 15:4<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Paul proclaims Jesus\u2019 resurrection he emphasizes its divine origin: God raised him from the dead<\/em> (compare Acts 3:15<\/a>; Acts 10:40<\/a>; Acts 13:37<\/a>; Rom 10:9<\/a>; Gal 1:1<\/a>; Eph 1:20<\/a>; Col 2:12<\/a>; 1 Thess 1:10<\/a>). He highlights its supernatural character when he says that Jesus \u201cappeared\u201d to those who had accompanied him from Galilee (compare Gen 12:7<\/a>; Judg 6:12<\/a>; Luke 1:11<\/a>; 24:34<\/a>; Acts 2:3<\/a>; 7:2<\/a>; 9:17<\/a>; 26:16<\/a>). He stresses the resurrection\u2019s historical reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eyewitnesses had opportunities to see Jesus over a period of many days<\/em> (compare Acts 1:3<\/a>). They were in a good position to identify him, since they had been part of his ministry band and had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem<\/em> (compare Acts 1:21\u201322<\/a>; Acts 10:40\u201341<\/a>). Theophilus and inquirers into Christianity\u2019s credibility in any time or place are given assurance once again that the central events of its saving message can stand, indeed invite, the test of public scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
