John 13:31-17:26 English Standard Version (ESV)

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (A)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (B)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (C)God will also glorify him in himself, and (D)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (E)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (F)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (G)A new commandment (H)I give to you, (I)that you love one another: (J)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (K)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (L)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (M)you cannot follow me now, (N)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (O)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (Q)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (R)Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In (S)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (T)I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (U)to myself, that (V)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] (W)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (X)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (Y)the way, and (Z)the truth, and (AA)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (AB)If you had known me, you would have (AC)known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and (AD)have seen him.”

(AE)Philip said to him, “Lord, (AF)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (AG)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (AH)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (AI)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (AJ)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (AK)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (AL)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (AM)am going to the Father. 13 (AN)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (AO)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (AP)If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (AQ)“If you love me, you will (AR)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (AS)Helper,[f] to be with you forever, 17 even (AT)the Spirit of truth, (AU)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (AV)will be[g] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (AW)I will come to you. 19 (AX)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (AY)you will see me. (AZ)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (BA)In that day you will know that (BB)I am in my Father, and (BC)you in me, and (BD)I in you. 21 (BE)Whoever has my commandments and (BF)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (BG)he who loves me (BH)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (BI)manifest myself to him.” 22 (BJ)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (BK)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (BL)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (BM)we will come to him and (BN)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (BO)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (BP)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (BQ)whom the Father will send in my name, (BR)he will teach you all things and (BS)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (BT)Peace I leave with you; (BU)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (BV)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (BW)let them be afraid. 28 (BX)You heard me say to you, (BY)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (BZ)am going to the Father, for (CA)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (CB)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (CC)the ruler of this world is coming. (CD)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (CE)as the Father has commanded me, (CF)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (CG)true vine, and my Father is (CH)the vinedresser. (CI)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (CJ)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (CK)that it may bear more fruit. Already (CL)you are clean (CM)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (CN)Abide (CO)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (CP)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (CQ)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (CR)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (CS)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (CT)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (CU)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (CV)By this my Father is glorified, that you (CW)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (CX)As the Father has loved me, (CY)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (CZ)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (DA)I have kept (DB)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (DC)that my joy may be in you, and that (DD)your joy may be full.

12 (DE)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (DF)Greater love has no one than this, (DG)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (DH)my friends (DI)if you do what I command you. 15 (DJ)No longer do I call you servants,[h] for the servant (DK)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (DL)all that I have heard from my Father (DM)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (DN)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (DO)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (DP)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (DQ)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (DR)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (DS)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (DT)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (DU)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (DV)they will also persecute you. (DW)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (DX)all these things they will do to you (DY)on account of my name, (DZ)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (EA)they would not have been guilty of sin,[i] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (EB)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (EC)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (ED)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (EE)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (EF)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (EG)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (EH)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (EI)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (EJ)you also will bear witness, (EK)because you have been with me (EL)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (EM)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, (EN)the hour is coming when (EO)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things (EP)because they have not known the Father, nor me. But (EQ)I have said these things to you, that when (ER)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, (ES)because I was with you. But now (ET)I am going to him who sent me, and (EU)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (EV)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (EW)if I do not go away, (EX)the Helper will not come to you. But (EY)if (EZ)I go, (FA)I will send him to you. (FB)And when he comes, he will (FC)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, (FD)because they do not believe in me; 10 (FE)concerning righteousness, (FF)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (FG)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (FH)is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When (FI)the Spirit of truth comes, (FJ)he will (FK)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but (FL)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will (FM)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 (FN)All that the Father has is mine; (FO)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 (FP)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and (FQ)again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So (FR)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, (FS)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, (FT)‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? (FU)We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 (FV)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (FW)you will weep and lament, but (FX)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but (FY)your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 (FZ)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 (GA)So also you have sorrow now, but (GB)I will see you again, and (GC)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 (GD)In that day you will (GE)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, (GF)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, (GG)he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. (GH)Ask, and you will receive, (GI)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (GJ)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (GK)for the Father himself loves you, because (GL)you have loved me and (GM)have believed that I came from God.[j] 28 (GN)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (GO)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (GP)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (GQ)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (GR)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (GS)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (GT)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (GU)will leave me alone. (GV)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (GW)in me you may have peace. (GX)In the world you will have (GY)tribulation. But (GZ)take heart; (HA)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, (HB)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, (HC)the hour has come; (HD)glorify your Son that the Son may (HE)glorify you, since (HF)you have given him authority over all flesh, (HG)to give eternal life to all (HH)whom you have given him. (HI)And this is eternal life, (HJ)that they know you, (HK)the only (HL)true God, and (HM)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I (HN)glorified you on earth, (HO)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, (HP)glorify me in your own presence with the glory (HQ)that I had with you (HR)before the world existed.

(HS)“I have manifested your name to the people (HT)whom you gave me out of the world. (HU)Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything (HV)that you have given me is from you. For I have given them (HW)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that (HX)I came from you; and (HY)they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. (HZ)I am not praying for the world but for those (IA)whom you have given me, for (IB)they are yours. 10 (IC)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and (ID)I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but (IE)they are in the world, and (IF)I am coming to you. (IG)Holy Father, (IH)keep them in your name, (II)which you have given me, (IJ)that they may be one, (IK)even as we are one. 12 (IL)While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have (IM)guarded them, and (IN)not one of them has been lost except (IO)the son of destruction, (IP)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now (IQ)I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have (IR)my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 (IS)I have given them your word, and (IT)the world has hated them (IU)because they are not of the world, (IV)just as I am not of the world. 15 I (IW)do not ask that you (IX)take them out of the world, but that you (IY)keep them from (IZ)the evil one.[k] 16 (JA)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (JB)Sanctify them[l] in the truth; (JC)your word is truth. 18 (JD)As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And (JE)for their sake (JF)I consecrate myself,[m] that they also (JG)may be sanctified[n] in truth.

20 “I do not (JH)ask for these only, but also for those (JI)who will believe in me through their word, 21 (JJ)that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that (JK)they also may be in (JL)us, so that the world (JM)may believe that you have sent me. 22 (JN)The glory that you have given me (JO)I have given to them, (JP)that they may be one even as we are one, 23 (JQ)I in them and you in me, (JR)that they may become perfectly one, (JS)so that the world may know that you sent me and (JT)loved them even as (JU)you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be (JV)with me (JW)where I am, (JX)to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me (JY)before the foundation of the world. 25 (JZ)O righteous Father, even though (KA)the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 (KB)I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love (KC)with which you have loved me may be in them, and (KD)I in them.”
