The book of Psalms one of the best examples of theology from below, or human words directed to God. This human origin, however, should not deny the Psalms their place in biblical canon for a reason. The words of the psalms give us a vehicle for our emotions, whether we are faced with joy or pain. In the midst of our humanity we are met with words that open our eyes to God and His guidance in new ways; we become aware that we are not alone in our trials.
Because the Psalms fit into this category of theology from below, readers often misunderstand or misapply them. The challenge is interpreting the Psalms in a way that remains true to Scripture but doesn’t leave out the aspect of practical, real-life application.
In this NIV Application Commentary volume, Dr. Gerald H. Wilson applies over twenty years of Psalms study and helps bridge the gap between the Psalms’ original messages and how we can apply them today. Not only does he closely examine individual psalms, but he also explores how they relate to one another and how their meanings can be enhanced when they are grouped together in different ways. Through this analysis it becomes obvious that the Psalms have a universal appeal that transcends the cultural differences between the time they were written and today.
Please note that this volume only includes commentary on Psalms 1 through Psalms 72.
