Chronicles tells the story of kingship and life in the kingdom, with joyful worship of God at its center. While the lives and exploits of Davidic kings will be rehearsed and principles for kingdom-living will be expounded, Chronicles is ultimately God’s story. The Lord God is gloriously enthroned in the heavens, and he rules as king over all the nations. He is the creator and only God to whom all praise is due. Splendor and majesty belong to him alone, and this is surely his story of his mighty acts done in and through his people Israel.
Chronicles is saturated with theological commentary, sermonettes, prophetic speeches, and prayers. This means the author is not simply writing a history book (even though he is a historian), but he is also interpreting Israel’s sacred history, carefully and meticulously explaining its significance for his own context. The spiritual tone of the writing reverberates through his work, with calls to prayer, worship, trust in God, and even joy! The stories invite the reader into the habitable world of the kingdom, not as dispassionate or aloof bystanders, but as active participants who join Israel in celebratory worship of the Lord God.

Carol M. Kaminski has taught Old Testament and Hebrew language courses at the Boston and South Hamilton campuses of Gordon-Conwell since joining the seminary faculty in 2002. She is a member of the Institute for Biblical Research and the Society of Biblical Literature. Dr. Kaminski’s research has focused on Genesis with two books published by T&T Clark, From Noah to Israel: Realization of the Primeaeval Blessing After the Flood (2004), and more recently, Was Noah Good? Finding Favour in the Flood Narrative (2014). Originally from Australia, Dr. Kaminski holds an MA in Old Testament and an MA in Religion from Gordon-Conwell, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her research interests include exegesis and theology of Genesis, Old Testament covenants and the meta-narrative of the Old Testament.
