Description

A landmark resource in biblical scholarship, Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament presents an authoritative English translation of C.L. Wilibald Grimm’s revised New Testament lexicon, originally based on C.G. Wilke’s Clavis Novi Testamenti. The result of nearly thirty years of meticulous work by Professor Joseph Henry Thayer, this lexicon—first published in 1885 and updated in 1889—provides unparalleled insight into Koine Greek vocabulary as used in the New Testament.

Thayer’s enhancements to the original work include:

  • Comprehensive verification of all biblical references
  • Extensive etymologies and listings of verbal forms and compounds
  • Discussion of synonyms, textual variants, and renderings from the Authorized and Revised Versions
  • Integration of extra-biblical usage, grammatical sources, commentaries, and dictionary references
  • A rich appendix cataloging post-Aristotelian terms, loan words, and vocabulary unique to individual New Testament authors, including a complete verb form table

Whether you’re studying scripture or just curious about the language behind it, Thayer’s Greek Lexicon makes exploring biblical Greek approachable and enlightening.

Note: Greek and Hebrew terms in this product are transliterated.

Joseph Henry Thayer was a distinguished American biblical scholar and theologian, best known for his monumental work on Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard University in 1850 and completed theological studies at Andover Theological Seminary in 1857.

After service as a pastor and later a chaplain during the Civil War, his academic career flourished at Andover Seminary and later at Harvard Divinity School, where he held the Bussey Professorship of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation from 1884 until his death in 1901.

Thayer was a key figure in the American Bible Revision Committee. His lexicon, a translation and expansion of Grimm and Wilke’s German work, remains a respected resource in biblical studies.
