Description

Discovering Luke is the perfect introduction to the interpretation of Luke’s gospel. Through a critical assessment of key interpreters and interpretative debates, this is a New Testament commentary that encourages in-depth study of the text and a genuine grappling with the theological and historical questions raised.

As part of the Discovering Biblical Texts series, Discovering Luke draws on a range of author-, text- and reader-centred methodological approaches as complementary rather than mutually exclusive ways of understanding the text. It also focuses on the reception history of Luke’s gospel, increasingly viewed by Biblical scholars as a vital aspect of interpretation rather than an optional extra.

Discovering Luke is an ideal Bible commentary for students and those looking to dig deeper into this key book of the New Testament. You will gain a solid grasp of the structure and content of Luke’s gospel, and a thorough understanding of a wide range of interpretative approaches and theological concerns that will enhance your own reading of the text.

Special note: For the best experience when navigating this resource, we recommend setting the table of contents to list view. As an introductory series covering the theological and historical background of the text, much of the included information is broadly thematic and not verse-specific.

Reviews

"Boxall's student-orientated guide to Matthew is expertly done." - Journal for the Study of The New Testament Booklist

"The book does well what Boxall claims to have accomplished: explore the Gospel and the myriad ways it has been interpreted. The clarity of the work makes it useful and beneficial for a student's first in-depth scholarly look at Matthew." - Restoration Quarterly

"Boxall has packed a lot of information into his book with a tight but limpid writing style, and a remarkable evenhandedness characterizes his discussion of disputed points. It would be hard to recommend, or even to imagine, a better contemporary introduction to the Gospel according to Matthew." - Robert H. Gundry, Westmont College

"No serious student of Matthew's Gospel should be without a copy." - Paula Gooder — Bible Society, UK

"Outstanding. . . . Full of thoughtful judgments, enabling even the experienced reader to see the text in quite a different way." - Nicholas King, University of Oxford

"A wide-ranging and insightful discussion of Matthew's Gospel that engages contemporary interpretations as well as those from across the ages. The result is a rich tapestry of readings that elaborate this complex, tensive Gospel." - Warren Carter, Brite Divinity School

Ian Boxall is Senior Tutor and Tutor in New Testament, St Stephen’s House, Oxford, and a member of the Faculty of Theology, University of Oxford. His most recent publications include Revelation: Vision and Insight (SPCK 2002), The Revelation of St John (Black’s New Testament Commentaries; Continuum/Hendrickson 2006), New Testament Interpretation (SCM Studyguides; SCM 2007) and The Books of the New Testament (SCM Studyguides; SCM 2007).

Reviews

"Written for students, the series strikes a balance between the readability of a popular commentary and the scholarliness of a critical commentary. The reader is able to listen in on current scholarly debate on Romans without being intimidated or overwhelmed. Overall, the book is a good primer on Romans and Pauline theology." - Concordia Theological Quarterly

"Anthony Thiselton has provided perhaps the easiest and quickest access to the issues in the letter to the Romans and to the relevant scholarship and trends concerning the letter. Few people have the ability to demonstrate the contribution and relevance of the tradition of Romans interpreters throughout the church's history the way Thiselton can." - Klyne Snodgrass, North Park Theological Seminary

"Good scholarship, deep theology, wisdom drawn from the centuries, and alertness to the issues that occupy us today. . . . Thiselton's rich, multifaceted engagement with Paul's most influential letter is a tour de force." - David F. Ford, University of Cambridge

"For those who want to understand what Paul was driving at and why he wrote in the way that he did, Thiselton's Discovering Romans is without equal." - Colin Brown, Fuller Theological Seminary

"Thiselton brings his unique perspectives and interests to this central Pauline book. His commentary is full of provocative exegetical and theological insights." - Stanley E. Porter, McMaster Divinity College

"Discovering Romans is a highly accessible guide to the biblical book itself and to a wealth of secondary literature about it. This is an enjoyable and rewarding work." - Matthew R. Malcolm, Trinity Theological College, Perth

Anthony C. Thiselton is Emeritus Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Nottingham, and associate priest in a Nottingham parish. He has previously taught at the Universities of Sheffield, Bristol and Durham and is known internationally for his work on the theory of biblical interpretation.

Reviews

“This introduction to the Psalms, by a scholar who has been studying them and praying them for decades, amply demonstrates their potential to feed our worship and revolutionize the way we pray.” - John Goldingay, Fuller Theological Seminary

“Jerome Creach is an internationally known Psalms scholar, and the depth and breadth of his knowledge of the Psalms are on full display in this impressive volume. It is the best introduction to the Psalms that I have ever seen. Readers will find answers to virtually every question that they might bring to their study of the Psalms, ranging from possible Davidic authorship to how the Psalms influenced the New Testament writers. Creach’s book will certainly be useful in seminary classrooms and to church professionals, and its clarity and accessibility will also make it useful to lay readers who want to engage the Psalms intelligently, fruitfully, and faithfully.” - J. Clinton McCann Jr. Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri

“This book is the product of some thirty years’ experience of teaching and writing for both the church and academy. It enters a competitive market, but Jerome Creach’s passion for the Psalms has resulted in an eminently readable introduction.” - Sue Gillingham, Worcester College, University of Oxford

“Jerome Creach offers more than a standard introduction to the Psalter. He offers an invitation for readers to discover the rhetorical and theological power of the Psalms. Creach engages the issues of Psalms research and interpretation with remarkable depth and breadth for such a lean introduction. I consider it ideal for the classroom.” - William P. Brown, Columbia Theological Seminary

“In this lively and engaging book Jerome Creach introduces contemporary Christians to the book of Psalms and encourages them to use it for both study and worship. At a time when many churches are losing touch with the Psalms, he convincingly shows that they are at the spiritual heart of the Bible.” - John Barton, Campion Hall, University of Oxford

“Jerome Creach’s book will be of great help and interest to Christians beginning study of the Psalms who are looking for a serious engagement with scholarship within a context of faithful reading. It is a valuable resource for ministry students and any Christian who wants to go deeper with the Psalms. It combines detailed discussions on the material itself, such as the discussion on what poetry is, with an attention always to the significance of the Psalter for its own time and for ours.” - Jenni Williams, vicar of St. Matthew and St. Luke, England

Jerome F. D. Creach is Robert C. Holland Professor of Old Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His recent publications include Violence in Scripture (Westminster John Knox Press, 2013) and Psalms (Westminster John Knox Press, 2012).

Description

What is life about? In the end, does it all amount to a wisp of vapor, a puff of wind, a mere breath---nothing you can get your hands on--the nearest thing to zero? So says the Preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes. But is this the whole message of Ecclesiastes?

With imagination and clarity, Derek Kidner introduces this Old Testament book which speaks so powerfully to our generation. His love of Hebrew poetry and his understanding of biblical mind shine through in his careful passage-by-passage exposition. The full biblical text is included.

About the Bible Speaks Today (BST) Series:

Edited by J.A. Motyer and the late John R. W. Stott, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are characterized by what Stott called a "threefold ideal . . . to expound the biblical text with accuracy, to relate it to contemporary life and to be readable." As such, each contributor in this series is both a noted scholar and a working pastor.

The BST series, now complete, covers all sixty-six books of the bible (Old and New Testaments) in fifty-five volumes. If you preach or teach from Scripture, the Bible Speaks Today series will help you apply the timeless biblical message to the everyday experiences of your listeners. And if you study the Bible on your own, these volumes will be a helpful resource focusing on the significance of God's Word for your own life and work.

Description

This classic commentary by F. W. Grosheide on 1 Corinthians unpacks Paul’s letter to the first-century Corinthian church and applies his teachings to our own situation with vigor and understanding. The volume throughout exhibits Grosheide’s fairness to the views of others and his single-mindedness to expound fully the inspired text.

Originally published in 1953 as part of the New International Commentary on the New Testament series, Grosheide’s Commentary on the First Epistle to the Corinthians in this new format will continue helping pastors, teachers, students, and other Bible readers grasp the aim and major themes of Paul’s first Corinthian letter.

The Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentaries series collects the best and most trusted Eerdmans commentaries from years gone by in a format that will make them available to readers for years to come. Some of the ECBC volumes were originally published in major commentary series, others as freestanding books. Some were first published decades ago, others more recently. Though written over the years for various levels of readers, the Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentaries all have this in common: pastors, scholars, and serious students of the Bible continue to read them, study them, and rely on them to help unlock the meaning and message of the Scriptures.

F. W. Grosheide (1881–1972) was a Dutch New Testament scholar who taught at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and served as president of the Bible Society of the Netherlands.

Description

After a lifetime of work that earned him the appellation “Dean of Evangelical Scholarship,” F. F. Bruce’s legacy of defending the historical reliability of the New Testament and explicating its meaning remains influential today, and rightly so. This collection of three commentaries in one volume—Bruce’s final study of Paul’s writings—represents his legacy well. It was met with immediate acclaim upon publication in 1984 and an Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion award the following year. In these pages—now Bruce’s third volume in the Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentaries series—this giant of twentieth-century biblical studies speaks still.

Reviews

"Here is [F. F. Bruce's] massive learning, thorough acquaintance with the ancient world, careful and cautious assessment of theories, love of Paul, and straightforward exposition of what Paul was saying. The student who works carefully through this volume will not only learn the main outlines of scholarly debate but will come to an understanding of the theological message of these letters." - Expository Times

"This is a fine commentary and is all that we have come to expect from the pen of Bruce, the doyen of evangelical scholars—clear, accurate, easy to read, and giving evidence of the author's breadth of learning and charity when disagreeing with the viewpoints of others." - Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society

"A summing up of a lifetime of productive study of these materials." - Religious Studies Review

"An evangelical student or pastor deciding on a commentary on Colossians would find Bruce a worthy candidate; on Ephesians there is simply no competitor. . . . As a single volume on the three epistles together it is of outstanding value." - Themelios

F. F. Bruce (1910-1990) was Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester, England. Author of numerous commentaries and other books, he served as general editor of the NICNT series from 1962 to 1990.

Description

Originally published in 1987 as part of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series, this commentary by Pieter Verhoef offers a thorough exegesis and exposition of Haggai and Malachi and highlights the ongoing relevance of their prophetic messages for the Christian church. Bringing his knowledge of the ancient Near East, the Old Testament, and biblical scholarship to bear, Verhoef displays the theological acumen and pastoral sensitivity that have made this commentary a standard resource for students, scholars, and pastors alike.

Verhoef's introduction to each book elucidates questions of authorship, style, text, structure, historical background, and message. Making extensive use of structural analysis, Verhoef argues convincingly for the authenticity, unity, and integrity of both books.

Description

For many readers the Epistle to the Hebrews is among the most difficult books of the New Testament. Understanding this rich, complex letter calls for a deep knowledge of its Old Testament underpinnings and of first-century biblical exegesis. This volume on Hebrews—originally part of the New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT) series—demonstrates F. F. Bruce’s mastery of both subjects.

First published in 1964 to instant critical acclaim, Bruce’s commentary has since become a classic work of evangelical biblical scholarship. Just before his death Bruce completed a full revision of the text, incorporating twenty-five years of further study. Every reader of Hebrews—whether student or scholar, minister or layperson—will benefit from the careful exegesis and pastoral wisdom distilled in this volume.

Reviews

"Every preacher and New Testament scholar should have a commentary by F. F. Bruce on Hebrews in his or her library." — Calvin Theological Journal

"The original edition was still arguably the best English commentary on Hebrews for general use. . . .The update of this standard commentary is unreservedly welcomed." — The Bible Translator

F. F. Bruce (1910-1990) was Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester, England. Author of numerous commentaries and other books, he served as general editor of the NICNT series from 1962 to 1990.

Description

In this commentary on John—originally published in Dutch in 1987 and translated into English a decade later—Herman Ridderbos engages the host of twentieth-century interpretations while also developing his own integral understanding of John in which the Gospel emerges as a profoundly theological work.

Beginning with a theological introduction on "the peculiar character of the Fourth Gospel," Ridderbos uses verse-by-verse exposition to unpack John's distinctive apostolic character, offering expert literary and homiletical exegesis of the Fourth Gospel "as the Christian church adopted it."

Reviews

"A rich resource for any preacher or student. . . . Ridderbos effectively displays the historical and conceptual coherence of the Gospel of John." — Interpretation

"Ridderbos’s commentary reflects balanced scholarship that endeavors to come to grips with what John was trying to say in his portrayal of Jesus. . . . A splendid example of theological analysis without postulatingredactional layers and a significant addition to works on John." — Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society

Herman Ridderbos (1909–2007) was professor of New Testament at the Theological School of the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands in Kampen.

Description

In this now-classic exposition of Revelation, first published in 1972, George Eldon Ladd offers a clear, engaging, and insightful reading of the Apocalypse that is ideal for the pulpit, classroom, or personal study.

In a brief introduction Ladd discusses the subject of authorship, the date and historical setting of Revelation, and the various methods of interpretation (preterist, historical, idealist, and futurist) that have been applied to the book throughout history. He then offers an analytical outline of Revelation’s structure and his verse-by-verse commentary, which reflects a historic premillennial perspective. The entire work is marked by Ladd’s sensitivity to the needs of both scholars and general readers and by his concern for proclaiming the message of Revelation for our time.

Reviews

"George Eldon Ladd has an amazing ability to explain simply and clearly something that is complex and opaque. He writes on the mysterious apocalypse lucidly, thoroughly, and very readably. . . . A very valuable interpretive aid to laypersons, pastors, and scholars alike." — Christianity Today

"This study merits several adjectives: careful, thorough, candid, lucid, discriminating. . . . A genuine achievement." — Interpretation

"A balanced and concise verse-by-verse interpretation of the Book of Revelation for the average reader." — Theological Studies

George Eldon Ladd (1911–1982) was professor of New Testament exegesis and theology at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California. His numerous books include The New Testament and Criticism, A Commentary on the Revelation of John, and Theology of the New Testament.

Description

A new and better society has been the constant dream of men and women. Responding to this dream, John Stott has been attracted back again and again by Paul's letter to the young church at Ephesus. It portrays a new society of Christ's making that stands out in bright relief against our colourless world of oppression, heartache, separation and division. Paul's letter, with its exultant vision of a renewed human community, has, says John Stott, 'stirred me deeply'.

In The Message of Ephesians, John Stott expounds Paul's theme of uniting all things in Christ by uniting his church and breaking down all that separates us from God, one ethnic group from another, husband from wife, parent from child, master from slave. Paul's insights are for all who want to build the church into the new society God has planned it to be.

Description

By any assessment, Esther is a rather strange book to find in the Bible. Not only is it, along with Daniel, the only book of the Bible to be set entirely outside of the Promised Land, it also shows no interest in that land. More than that, Esther is the only book in the Bible which definitely does not mention God. None of this should be taken as meaning that the book has no theological intention--on the contrary it has a developed theology, but it is a theology which operates precisely because it does not mention God directly. In this volume in the Bible Speaks Today commentary series, David Firth explores this paradoxically important book and its implications for our own contemporary context, where the reality of God’s presence is experienced against a backdrop of God’s relative anonymity and seeming absence.
